Here are a few of her thoughts, shared at the 100 th anniversary SAI Convention in 2003: "Music has always been a most important part of my life. Perhaps that is why I like the words of the Sigma Alpha Iota Symphony so much — music DOES put my world in touch with the 'harmony from within'….Over the years, friendships have kept me involved in many wonderful activities through my alumnae chapter and the National Fraternity. I have also had the privilege of supporting music programs and talented young musicians. What a joy to see so many — like my dear friends, Jessye Norman and Carlos Rodriguez — achieve success. rough music and Sigma Alpha Iota, my life has been filled with hope and warmth and beauty." As a result of her continued and exceptional service to SAI throughout her lifetime, Helen was a recipient of many Sigma Alpha Iota honors. She received the Sword of Honor, the Rose of Honor, the National Alumnae Leadership Diamond Sword of Honor, and the Ring of Excellence. en, at the 2000 National Convention, she was awarded the Fraternity's very highest honor, the Dorothy Whinery Special Leadership Award. e standing ovation at that Dinner of Honors spoke volumes about the love and deep respect that all SAI members had for Helen May. Helen always had a radiant smile on her face. She was a woman who knew how to set her mind to something and then make it happen, and her pure heart is a shining example for all of us. Knowing that Helen believed in supporting the eternal power of music, I close with the SAI open motto: "Vita brevis, ars longa. Life is short, but art is Long." (Hippocrates, Greek philosopher) May the beauty of the spirit of music keep the memory of Helen ever alive in our hearts. Following these remarks, SAI Executive Director Ruth Sieber Johnson placed a white rose onstage in Helen's memory. Student members of the SAI collegiate chapters in the Greater D.C. area presented red roses to the performers, continuing the long-standing tradition that Helen would have known so well. e music will live on through Helen's generosity to SAI Philanthropies as a part of PAN'S LEGACY. All SAIs owe a debt of gratitude to this inspirational woman. As sung by Jessye Norman at the close of the celebration, "Amazing Grace"!
