PAN PIPES sPRIng 2014 saI-natIOnal.ORg 2 editor's Notes Dear readers, a pril showers bring May flowers! Spring has sprung, and concert season is upon us. Now's the time for that hard work and practice you put in during the winter to be performed onstage for all to enjoy. I hope you've had an opportunity to explore some of the new compositions by members of the SAI Composers Bureau. I am constantly awed and amazed by the incredible music these composers create year after year. Former NVP Collegiate Chapters, Yvonne Glass, shares with us an inspirational story about Nashville in Harmony (NiH), Tennessee's first musical organization for the GLBT Community and their straight allies. They "use music to build community and create social change," and choose songs to perform that align with their mission. NiH was recently honored at a recent concert by a visit from SAI Executive Director Ruth Sieber Johnson, and NVP Fraternity Development Joyce Garcia. Rosalind Mohnsen walks us through the Historic Organ Tour, which took place in North Germany. The tour focused on thirty-one different organs, and allowed tour participants an opportunity to perform on each. Thanks to completed restoration work on these magnificent instruments, she was able to hear and perform on them just as they would have sounded hundreds of years ago. The winner of the Margaret Blackburn Biennial Composition Competition has been chosen. The competition is offered by the Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter in memory of Margaret Blackburn, composer of the SAI Chorale. Congratulations to Eri Kim for her composition, "P.A.R.I.S.," work for chamber ensemble. Taylor Forester shares some thoughts about how you can assist core teachers by working on reading and writing in the music classroom, while still making it a fun and musically enjoyable experience. While rehearsal is an important part of any music class, writing about an interesting musical subject can help increase vocabulary and improve communication skills. Pan PiPes wants to hear from YOU! We're looking for submissions for future issues. Have you performed in a national or international tour this year? Has your composition been performed by a major symphony orchestra? Did you win a musical award? Please tell us all about it in your next article submission. We love to receive stories about music education, composition, performance, history, and any other musical topic that would be relevant on a national scale. What would you like to share with our readers? Contact me, Heather Lam, at panpipeseditor@gmail.com with your story ideas and submissions.
