PAN PIPES SummER 2014 Sai-natiOnal.ORg 2 editor's Notes Dear readers, W hat a marvelous summer this has been! Many of you have been hard at work practicing for summer concerts, writing new pieces of music, or preparing new and exciting lesson plans for the fall. Thank you to those who have already shared their stories with us here at PAN PIPES, and I'm looking forward to hearing about more of those experiences this year. Please join me in congratulating Member Laureate Libby Larsen, recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Composer Award from the American Guild of Organists (AGO). Larsen joins a distinguished group of musicians, along with fellow SAIs, who have been honored for their outstanding composition work for organ and choral music in the United States. Some SAIs have been traveling the globe during the summer vacation. Jayne Hanlin had the opportunity to visit the Carl Maria von Weber museum in Dresden, Germany. She takes us through the history surrounding the museum, and gives us a glimpse into von Weber's life in the 1820s. If you happen to be in the area, this is one museum that you don't want to miss. Epsilon Delta initiate Jane Chu has been confirmed by the US Senate as 11 th Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. The story behind how her mother came to America is nothing short of amazing, and the story behind Chu's love for music is touching and inspirational. As the summer draws to a close and you're beginning your planning for the year, consider putting together an application for one of the grants or scholarships offered by SAI Philanthropies, Inc. There are Chapter Outreach Grants, the Professional Development / Education Grant, Alumnae Project Seed Grant, as well as numerous other scholarships and grants available. Check out our website at sai-national.org for the full list of grants and scholarships, the deadlines for application, further details about each opportunity, and eligibility requirements. I hope you're all as excited as I am about what this year will bring. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
