2014 FRATERNITY AWARDS PAN PIPES FALL 2014 sAI-NATIONAL.ORg 14 I nitiated by Iota eta in 2011, Jessica Sullivan served her chapter as President (2013-2014), Sergeant-at- Arms (2012-2013) and Historian Chairman (2012- 2013). Jessica was awarded the Sword of Honor in 2013 and was the winner of an Undergraduate Scholarship from SAI Philanthropies that year. She displayed outstanding leadership in the chapter and was highly involved in chapter activities culminating in a Sisterhood Retreat this past year that she directed to promote sisterhood and improve knowledge of Sigma Alpha Iota. She excelled academically and used her excellent communication skills to encourage all members to participate in chapter events. Jessica also worked on a benefit project for Tioga Independent School District to help their program raise money for competitions, new instruments and music. She must have the Sword of Honor or be nominated for the Sword of Honor at the same time. The award is based on four criteria: • Qualities of leadership expressed in the member's sense of organization and her ability to work well with chapter members, advisors, and faculty • Fraternity service in terms of chapter offices held, committee chairmanships, performance on chapter musicales, cooperation in chapter activities, and national fraternity viewpoint • Campus activities in terms of student organization participation, offices held outside of the fraternity, and general campus honors • Maintenance of a high scholarship level. K aren Murphy is an Epsilon Chi Patroness initiate where she serves as Faculty Advisor. She received her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Collaborative Piano from the University of Minnesota, studying with Margo Garrett; her Master of Music in Piano Accompanying from Arizona State University, studying with Eckart Sellheim, and her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Indiana University where she studied with Alfonso Montecino. As a free-lance musician, she has performed collaboratively and served as a coach in a variety of venues including : Musical Director of the Arizona Family eater and Grand Canyon University, both in Phoenix, Arizona; St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota and the Festival Internacional de Música de Campina Grande in Paraiba, Brazil. As the Principal Pianist for the Phoenix Boys Choir, Karen performed throughout Europe, Canada and the United States. In addition, Karen has premiered several new works including : the Southwest premier of Ellwood Derr's song-cycle Six Songs of Sundry Sorts for soprano, alto saxophone and piano; Lori Laitman's song-cycle e Blood Jet for soprano and piano; and Jonathan Kolm's song cycle Sanctuaries of Heaven and Earth for soprano and piano and performed Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey with soprano Kathy Price. Karen is currently serving on the piano faculty at Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi where she serves as Coordinator of Collaborative Piano; recital pianist for students and faculty and instructor of class piano. Karen and Dr. Nancy D. Hargrove, William L. Giles Distinguished Professor of English, have collaborated with the MSU voice area for several years in presenting interdisciplinary programs on such American poets as Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Elliot, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost and Walt Whitman. When she's not working, she enjoys birding and spending time with both husband, Richard, and Felix, their precocious Shih-poo. It is an annual award, intended to recognize those individuals who volunteer their time, love, and advice to our college chapters. The advisor is not required to be an initiated member of Sigma Alpha Iota.
