PAN PIPES WINTER 2015 saI-NaTIONal.ORg 18 D ear Reader, You are cordially invited to click over to the Sigma Alpha Iota Homepage (sai-national.org) where you'll find a link to the 66 th Annual American Composers Update, a project of the Sigma Alpha Iota Composers Bureau Every year composers are canvassed to collect a survey of new music in the United States, and from the sample of respondents, you will find that there is a lot more creativity and performance going on in this great country than one would suspect from a glance at the programs of many presenting organizations. e one theme throughout this edition is that it represents the country itself, with Native American, Asian, European, and Middle Eastern surnames; and that it includes music for orchestras and choirs and bands to Korean gayageum, in performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to elementary school choirs. Music of American composers has been heard literally around the world this year, too. Yet, it is difficult for a living composer to get a performance of a successful work, much less a new work. To help fulfill one of the 2012 – 2015 National Objectives: "Advance American composers, especially women, through new commissions, performances of their works, and concert attendance" is not only the composer's task, but takes the energy of all musicians. e Composers Bureau helps performers and presenters find composers whose music can get new audiences, and the Composers Bureau helps composers and performers find links to each other. e Composers Bureau is a way for a soprano planning her senior recital to find a composition by a composer from her home town or from her state, and for a trombone teacher to find music to expand the technique of his or her students. So, click on over to the Annual American Composers Update to see what's new, then scan through the Composers Bureau site, conveniently accessible through a link at the top of the SAI homepage.
