saI-NaTIONal.ORg WINTER 2015 PAN PIPES 21 Who applies for a music education outreach grant? • Sisters of Sigma Alpha Iota in good standing who teach music in public schools (not charter or private) • Music educators in public school settings who are sponsored by SAI members in good standing Note: Applying/sponsoring SAI must be in good financial standing with the fraternity How does an eligible applicant apply for a music education outreach grant? The application process is online at sai-national.org. The applicant creates a project with a clear budget. Note: The project should cost $5000 or less to complete. The funds are for equipment, instruments or supplies (not trips, events or honoraria). This grant may be applied for once every three years, and will not exceed $5,000. The project must be endorsed by a school administrator. A recommendation from an SAI sponsor is required for non-member applicants. Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies Inc. reserves the right not to award a grant if no applicant is judged to be sufficiently qualified. secrets to success: • Create an innovative way to improve an existing public school music program through the purchase of equipment, instruments or supplies. • Consider in your project the impact the new items will have on the students and families of the school community. • Verify availability and exact costs for items to be purchased, including shipping and handling. Note: Purchases for public school programs are tax exempt. The budget must be precise and accurate. One of our favorite projects was called "Bringing the Arts to Life." e Music Education Outreach Grant is intended to perpetuate the traditions of public school music in our country. e funds enrich the individual music program and the entire community. We hope you will begin to consider what might be needed to bring more life to the public school music pro- gram in your area. e Music Education Outreach Grant can be used for a wide variety of practical, innovative and pedagogical ways. Below you will find the basic information needed for understanding who qualifies for a Music Education Outreach Grant and how to begin the application/brainstorming process. Associate Professor of Music at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Dr. Brenda Smith, was initi- ated by the Beta Epsilon chapter. Dr. Smith served as Lambda B Province Officer, was a Chapter Advisor, and received both the Sword of Honor and Rose of Honor. She has presented workshops at several major music conferences and is the author of Choral Pedagogy and Cantare et Sonare: A Handbook of Choral Performance Practice.
