PAN PIPES WINTER 2015 saI-NaTIONal.ORg 6 2015 Music Education Scholarship recipient Carly Huhn, a Sigma Lambda initiate at Iowa State University, sent a thank-you note to SAI National Headquarters. g reetings from eastern Iowa! ank you so much for providing the Music Education Scholarship For Graduate Students In Memory of Mabel Biever as I continued the Master's degree at the University of St. omas this past summer. I enrolled in three courses over six weeks: Advanced Topics in Music History and Literature, Voice Fundamentals, and Orff Level 1. All of the courses required a lot of reading, writing, analyzing, researching, collaborating, and presenting. ere was a lot to learn, but I am looking forward to writing my final curriculum project and graduating this December. Since returning from Minnesota, I have implemented many of the strategies I learned. My students are already better musicians, singers, instrumentalists, and people as they continue to improve. As a teacher, I feel like I have a lot more "tricks in my bag" in order for them to grasps the new musical concepts being presented. Plus, this is my fourth year teaching in the same school, so my relationship with my students has deepened every year. Even though school has only been in session seven weeks, we have had many musical happenings. In September, seven fih grade students auditioned for Iowa's Opus Honor Choir. In October, we are getting ready to march with the fih graders in our school district's Homecoming Parade. Also in that month the third graders presented a world music program. At the end of October, the Early Birds, our fourth and fih grade choir, performed at a Youth Choral Clinic. I also presented with other music educators from Kodaly Educators of Iowa at the Iowa Music Educators Association professional development concert in November. I continue to sing in different community events including two Valentine's concerts and a concert next week. In January 2014, I enjoyed singing in the chorus of Carmen with the Cedar Rapids Opera eatre. I also continue to play for my church's orchestra and am on the vocal worship team. ank you for providing me with the funds to let me attend graduate school. Without your support, it would not have been possible. D ianne McCarty, elected as National Treasurer in 1997, passed away on January 21, 2015.
