UGANDA Sky Kids ree years ago P2P received a request from Joseph Kiwanuka for a variety of instruments including keyboards for his community music group, Joseannes Messiahs Music Group of Youth, a group dedicated to bringing music to the citizens of Lweza. Aer a long process and the assistance of a number of colleagues, P2P was able to send two keyboards, two violins, and two violas to Joseph. He has now created Sky Kids Uganda, a program dedicated to improving health, education, water and sanitary issues in Lweza. As reported in the Spring 2014 PAN PIPES: e P2P Project is pleased to be able to assist Joseph Kiwanuka, a classically trained singer in Kampala, Uganda, who has created the community-based music group Joseannex Messiahs Music Group Lweza. Not only has Joseph created this non-profit in Uganda, he provides for 85 children (all of their basic needs and education) and has started to build a mobile music program to bring formal training in both instrumental and choral music to the children in the schools. anks to the assistance of Susan Dane Setin, founder of S.M.A.R.T. WOMEN INTERNATIONAL, P2P will be able to send two violins and two violas donated by the Des Moines Alumnae Chapter as well as two electric keyboards to Joseph this summer. DOMESTIC EFFORTS UNITED STATES Eblen Intermediate School, Buncombe County, NC e Eblen Intermediate School band, under the direction of Kimberly Benson, has grown quickly during the past few years and was in need of additional materials. e band has received clarinets, drum sticks, and other materials including extra mouth pieces, reeds, grease, valve oil, tuners, band scores, and methods books. Charlotte, NC, YMCA locations SAI sister Renee Kerr started a number of elementary music programs in the Greater Charlotte area through local YMCAs. ese are aerschool programs and programs for home- schooled students. Renee received a variety of percussion instruments including shakers, tambourines, rhythms sticks, a djemba, folding music stands, and general music education texts and CDs. CHICAGO The People's Music School e People's Music School is a completely free music school serving students in the metropolitan Chicago area. ey have received a variety of materials donated by our project including sheet music and methods books, violins, violas, bows for all stringed instruments, a newly repaired clarinet, and accessories including rosin, reeds, wind and brass cleaning supplies, and folding music stands. As reported in the Spring 2014 PAN PIPES: anks to a referral from Seattle Alumnae Chapter member Cara Sawyer, the P2P Project is now assisting Executive Director Albert Oppenheimer of the People's Music School Youth Orchestras in Chicago, IL.
