PAN PIPES SPRING 2015 SAI-NATIONAL.ORG 12 Sister Cities Essex-Haiti In Deschapelles both the Fanfare Band, under direction of Abner Achoule, and the Music Project of SCEH have expanded greatly, thanks to the donation of instruments from P2P. Keyboards, brass, wind, and percussion instruments plus accessories such as music stands, valve oil and repair materials have all been gratefully accepted. e students (both young and old) are progressing at a very quick rate thanks to the quality of instruments now available. e bands regularly perform in the community for weddings, funerals, and other events. As reported in the Spring 2012 PAN PIPES: e mission of Sister Cities Essex- Haiti (SCEH) is to build a mutual, long- term, sustainable relationship between the people of Essex, CT, and the people of Deschapelles, the Hospital Albert Schweitzer located in Deschapelles, and their extended communities. Sister Cities Essex-Haiti enables community members to learn, work and solve problems together through an exchange of educational, cultural, professional, municipal, business, and technical initiatives and projects. Ebenezer Glenn Orphanage e school continues to receive musical instruments and materials to help build their school programs, including a portable keyboard and a set of recorders. BLUME Haiti As the director of BLUME Haiti, which stands for Building Leaders rough Music Education, Janet Anthony offers assistance to more than two dozen different music organizations throughout Haiti. P2P has sent shipments of repair materials including replacement strings, reeds, valve oil, pads for wind instruments, and cleaning supplies for brass instruments for distribution among their recipient organizations. INDIA Menri Monastery SAI patroness Eileen Nadzam has received violins, violas, rosin, tuners, and other accessories donated by P2P to assist in her work as a music teacher at the Menri Monastery, a Buddhist monastery in the foothills of the Himalayas in Northern India. Her students include monks at the monastery, nuns at the nearby convent, and young students at the local secular school. When Eileen is home in the US, she teaches lessons via Skype. JAMAICA St. Mary High School Working with the Principal of the school, Lt. Col. E. V. Johnson, students at St. Mary High School received an assortment of percussion instruments and accessories to help build their music program; two shipments of donations included triangles, sleigh bells, cow bells, shakers, cymbals, drum sticks, and guitar strings.
