SAI-NATIONAL.ORG SPRING 2015 PAN PIPES 23 Dr. Plugge holds a Bachelor's in Music from Baylor University and a Master's and Doctorate from Northwestern University. Dr. Marcie Ray Dr. Marcie Ray was initiated by the Alpha Lambda Chapter in February. Dr. Ray is an Assistant Professor of Musicology in the College of Music at Michigan State University. At MSU, she teaches courses about music history and various sociological issues, provides preview lectures for College of Music concerts, and has written and presented papers on gender and music. Prior to earning her Doctorate in Musicology, Dr. Ray earned a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Texas at Austin. She performed for ten years as a coloratura soprano. She earned her Master's at UCLA where she was awarded the Chancellor's Fellowship for five years, researching the relationship between music and gender in history. In January 2014, Dr. Ray presented a workshop at Alpha State Day titled, "Rewriting the Pygmalion Myth: Women in Music History." Kathryn Swan Kathryn ("Kathy") Swan was initiated by the Delta Epsilon Chapter in December. She represents Cape Girardeau and part of Cape Girardeau County (District 147) in the Missouri House of Representatives. She is President of JCS Wireless, a small wireless communications company with offices in Cape Girardeau and Perryville in Missouri, and in Chester, IL. In addition, she has worked in a variety of nursing areas including progressive care, employee health, infection control, administrative supervision, and as a clinical instructor. Professionally, she has served as Chair of the Great Lakes Motorola Service Station Association, Chair of the Missouri National Federation of Independent Business Leadership Council, Vice-chair of the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and board secretary of Sigma eta Tau (an honorary nursing association). Rep. Swan was elected to the General Assembly in November 2012. Previous elected offices include Cape Girardeau Board of Education, Cape Girardeau City Council, and Missouri Republican Party State Committeewoman. She served over 9 years on the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education, initially appointed by Gov. Holden and reappointed by Governors Blunt and Nixon, and served two terms as board chair. She began flute and piano at age 9 and performed in her high school band. She has served as church organist and flutist since 1978 and a church music director since 1982. She performed as an orchestra member for high school musicals from 1997 to 2003. Dr. Scott Tobias Dr. Scott Tobias was initiated by the Zeta Tau Chapter in February. Dr. Tobias is the Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Central Florida. In addition to conducting the Wind Ensemble, he teaches conducting and music education. He currently conducts the Youth Band of Orlando and remains an active clinician for honor bands across the country. Bands under Dr. Tobias' direction have performed nationally and internationally at events such as the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival and the London New Year's Day Parade. He was awarded the "Citation of Excellence" from the National Band Association on three occasions and has been named to Who's Who Among America's Teachers on six separate occasions. Dr. Tobias currently serves as the 2nd Vice-President of the National Band Association. Dr. Lori Wacker Dr. Lori Wacker was initiated by the Beta Psi Chapter in February. Dr. Wacker received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in Clarinet Performance and her Master's and Doctorate from Indiana University in Music eory. Teaching collegiate theory courses since 1989, she has been on the faculty at East Carolina University since 2001. As a professor, Dr. Wacker makes herself available during school hours and on weekends to spend one-on-one time with her students in order to ensure that they understand the material. She makes her class material fun and interesting and is invested in the success of her students. Dr. Wacker has also continued to perform throughout her career both locally and nationally.
