SAI-NATIONAL.ORG SUMMER 2015 PAN PIPES 11 should choose the order of the rooms to visit; there is no single particular path that must be followed. On the upper level, the collection is divided into galleries with collections representing different geographic areas: Africa, Middle East, Asia (Central, South, East, and Southeast), Oceania, Latin America, United States and Canada, and Europe. Since there wasn't time on my visit that day to see all of the exhibits, I focused first on Europe with displays organized by country or type of music or instruments: for example, Ukraine with violinist David Oistrakh playing Brahms; Estonia with unusual loutspill, savipill, pajupill, and voopil; salon music; Jewish music, featuring a recording of oldest Holocaust survivor Alice Herz-Sommer (1903-2014) playing Franz Schubert's Impromptu, No. 2, Op. 142, D. 935; harmonicas; bagpipes; and an exhibit celebrating the violin makers of Cremona, Italy. en I walked to the connecting United States gallery that featured a fascinating section about the making (such as voicing, rim, and soundboard) of a Steinway piano. is was of special interest to me since my late brother, concert pianist Malcolm Frager, was a Steinway artist. I missed the special exhibit downstairs, "Beyond the Beat: Drums of the World." Aer lunch at MIM's upscale Café Allegro, I had opted to spend three hours exploring only the museum's amazing permanent collection. Before departing and going outside in the Phoenix sunshine, I stopped by the Museum Store that has many musical items, the purchase of which supports this wonderful institution founded by Board Chairman Robert J. Ulrich, Retired CEO and Chairman Emeritus of Target. e museum, which celebrates its fih anniversary in 2015, is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular adult admission for one day is $20. ere is no special rate for seniors. Jayne I. Hanlin is an initiate of Alpha Omicron and current member of the St. Louis Alumnae chapter.
