SAI-NATIONAL.ORG SUMMER 2015 PAN PIPES 19 DORIS STEVENSON Doris Stevenson was initiated as a Member Laureate by the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter in April. Stevenson, Artist in Residence at Williams College, divides her time between Williamstown, MA, and New York City where she is a busy recitalist, chamber musician, and teacher. She has soloed with the Boston Pops, played at Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Salle Pleyel in Paris, Sala de Musica Arango in Bogota, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. She is a founding member of the Sitka Summer Music Festival in Alaska and has toured throughout that state, playing in many remote Native Alaskan communities. Other chamber music festivals in which she has participated include the Grand Canyon Festival, Steamboat Springs Strings in the Mountains, Marin Music Fest, and the Park City Beethoven Festival. She has also performed throughout the United States for the Piatigorsky Foundation, an organization which presents classical music with commentary in nontraditional venues to people who might not otherwise hear live classical music. Her deep commitment to new music has led her to feature in her programs the works of over 100 composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. She was the first woman to perform Frederick Rzewski's masterpiece, De Profundis, for speaking pianist, which she played in New York at Weill Recital Hall. Her recordings include the Saint Saens violin sonatas with Andres Cardenes on the Arabesque label and the complete Mendelssohn cello works with Jeffrey Solow for Centaur, as well as three CDs with cellist Nathaniel Rosen: the Brahms Sonatas for JMR records plus two albums of romantic pieces entitled Reverie and Orientale for Northstar. A Stravinsky CD with violinist Mark Peskanov received a Grammy nomination. She earned her Bachelor's from Arizona State University where she was an initiate of Gamma Mu, and her Master's from the University of Southern California. She has taught for ten years at the University of Southern California and has been Lyell B. Clay Artist in Residence at Williams College since 1987. LORI ANNE WILLIAMS Lori Anne Williams was initiated as an Honorary Member by the Mu Gamma Chapter in April. Lori Anne Williams has been an educator for over twenty years. Before becoming a general music teacher and vocal music teacher at Wilson High School in the District of Columbia, Williams worked in radio and concert production at Dimensions Entertainment. When she temporarily moved to Japan, she continued to perform and enrich her community by giving piano lessons to Japanese children in the neighborhood. Re-entering the professional world when she returned to America, she was first a choir director for Fort Foote Baptist Church and then for the non- profit organization the Best Friends Foundation. While directing choirs, Williams broke out as an independent performer, singing with acts such as contemporary jazz ensemble Collaboration, e 4 Kings of R&B (including legends Ben E. King and Lloyd Price), Maysa, SaltmanKnowles, and more. In 2010, she released her first solo album entitled Healing Within. Her sophomore album, Eclipse of the Soul, was released in 2012. She will continue working on her third solo project aer she finishes her performance in the musical Bessie's Blues at MetroStage in Alexandria, VA. She has performed in several other musicals at MetroStage, including Ladies Swing the Blues, for which she was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award; she has also held concerts at the venue. In addition to MetroStage, Williams performs at venues such as Blues Alley and Twins Jazz Lounge. She also travels to Europe to tour during the summers and teach and perform at the Poysdorf Jazz and Wine Festival in Austria. She earned her Bachelor's from Hampton University. Lori was the former Director of Programs for the Best Friends Foundation. Williams is the Director of Vocal Music and former Music Department Chairperson at Wilson Senior High School. She was recognized as an outstanding Music Teacher in the October 2000 issue of Teaching Music magazine. She was selected to have her biography appear in the 2005 Premier Edition of Great Women of the 21st Century for her professional dedication and commitment to communities. She was also recognized as a 2005-2006 National Honor Roll's Outstanding American Teacher. A recipient of the 2007 Superintendent's Arts Teacher of the Year Award, she was also honored at the Mayor's Arts Awards, held at the John F. Kennedy Center. is award was given on behalf of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, DC Public Schools, and the DC Arts. Additionally, she was the 2010 Vincent E. Reed Teacher of the Year. PHILIP J. BAUMAN Phillip J. Bauman was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Lake County Alumnae Chapter in May. Philip Bauman serves as music director of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra and conductor of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra. Known for his charismatic presence on and off the podium, he is frequently hailed for his innovative programs and consistently captivating performances. In the summer of 2014, Bauman led a successful concert tour conducting in Austria and Germany. Performances were held in Vienna, Munich, and DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS NATIONAL ARTS ASSOCIATE a man or woman who is nationally recognized for distinguished contribution to the arts MEMBER LAUREATE a collegiate-initiated member of the Fraternity who has achieved international distinction in the music profession.
