When she came to compete, one of her goals was to advance to the semi- finals, which she had at the time we met. Beyond that, she wanted to get into the finals and win the competition as all of the musicians wanted to do, but her more important goal was to network, get her name and music known, and gain fans so she would have more performance opportunities. In fact, networking is one of the main goals of all the musicians at the IBC. e front cover of the program book leaves no question about it: "Five days of blues and schmooze," and all were prepared to enjoy doing just that. One of the members of Kingdom Brothers ended up spending an aernoon with a band from Poland. We met members of other blues societies. I struck up a conversation with a woman from Canada who had come to enjoy the music and cheer on her local band. A group of us booked a tour of the Gibson Factory, and I have been in contact with some of the musicians I met while I was there. For those who are interested in some of the results of the competition for some of the bands mentioned, Kingdom Brothers went through to the semi-finals but their competition run ended there. Betty Fox went through to the finals, as did the band from Spain. None of them placed, but all went home with new fans and prospects for new performance opportunities. I came home having met some great musicians and having had a chance to hear their music. I gained new inspiration in my own musical efforts and a greater knowledge and appreciation of the blues. Note for those interested in attending the IBC: the showcases are usually held in locations where those of any age can attend. However, if you are under 21, it is best to check with individual venues regarding their admittance policies during the competition. Tricia Link is an initiate of Epsilon Pi at Truman State University. Previously affiliated with the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter, she is currently a member of the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter.
