PAN PIPES SUMMER 2015 SAI-NATIONAL.ORG 2 OUR NORTH CAROLINA HOME I n late June and early July, the Brevard Music Center and the Asheville Lyric Opera, both of North Carolina, combined to present Verdi's Rigoletto. e project leveraged BMC's and ALO's enabled the organizations to share costs and resources, resulting in a production of high artistic quality. e performances reached a larger, regional, and more diverse audience, imparting a greater impact on the arts and culture of western North Carolina. e Music Center's students received an opportunity to work in an established professional opera house, tour a show, and perform it in different surroundings and acoustics, while experiencing the professional opera world. e companies split the performances between Brevard and Asheville. e partnership established and highlighted the natural stepping stone process students can take from a top-tier educational institution to a successful professional opera company. "Our 2015 season has something for everyone – world-class soloists and conductors, great pieces from Beethoven to Tchaikovsky to Mahler, old friends and new faces, and so much more," said Mark Weinstein, BMC President. "For me, the most exciting element is that each and every concert will serve as a spotlight on our mission – teaching and mentoring the most gied and talented young musicians in the country. I invite everyone to bring a picnic, a bottle of wine, and come experience the beauty of the setting, the majesty of the music, and the thrill and inspiration of our wonderful students." Rigoletto portrays the happenings in the court of the despicable Duke of Mantua. Complexities abound when the Duke lays eyes on the daughter of his court jester, Rigoletto. With libretto by Francesco Maria Piave's, Rigoletto was an instantaneous hit aer its premiere in 1851 and features one of opera's most loved arias, "La donna é mobile." In 2015, Brevard Music Center will stage four operas at the Porter Center for Performing Arts on the campus of Brevard College. ree mainstage opera productions will be presented in the Scott Concert Hall: W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte; Douglas Moore's e Ballad of Baby Doe; and Rigoletto. In anticipation of its 2016 fully-staged world premiere in Brevard, BMC will present Falling Angel, by North Carolina composer J. Mark Scearce on July 23-25. is "Opera Noir", filled with hauntingly beautiful melodies and a gripping storyline, represents BMC's initial collaboration with New York's Center for Contemporary Opera. e Music Center is situated on a wooded 180-acre campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Founded in 1936, the Music Center has matured into one of this country's premier summer training programs and festivals.
