PAN PIPES • WINTER 2016 • sai-national.org 32 D R . K YO U N G C H O Dr. Kyoung Cho was initiated as an Honorary Member in November by the Delta Chi Chapter. Internationally acclaimed Korean soprano Kyoung Cho has established a reputation in diverse regions of Asia, Europe, The Mid- East, and North America. Dr. Kyoung Cho is currently an Associate Professor of Voice at the University of South Florida after having taught at State University of New York at Fredonia and at Luther College. In September 2014, Dr. Cho presented recitals in Vienna, Budapest, and Florence. Her other previous international solo appearances have included concerts in Italy, Austria, France, Germany, Luxembourg, China, Thailand, Cambodia, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Israel, Canada, and her native Korea. On the national level, her performances took place in several cities including in New York City's Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, and Merkin Hall. Dr. Cho's operatic roles include Violetta in La Traviata, Mimi in La Bohème, Liù in Turandot, Gretel in Hansel & Gretel, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte, Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, and Cio- Cio San in Madama Butterfly. Her oratorio repertoires include Brahms' Requiem, Mozart's Requiem, Saint-Saëns' Christmas Oratorio, John Rutter's Requiem, Fauré's Requiem, Mozart's c minor Mass, Bach's Magnificat, Messiah, and The Creation. As a versatile artist, her areas of specialization include Korean Art Songs, opera, oratorio, and art songs of contemporary composers. Her CD recordings on Korean Art Songs have been critically acclaimed in the US, Korea, and Italy. Dr. Cho was featured in an interview to introduce Korean Art Songs by "Vocal Point" on classical music station WCNY-FM 91.3, New York NPR station, and this interview aired on June 28, 2014. In addition to receiving a number of awards from national and international organizations and competitions, she received twelve research grants from USF since 2007. As a teacher, she has presented voice master classes in China, Korea, Thailand, Luxembourg, and several cities in the U.S. Her former students have been accepted into the Manhattan School of Music, the Mannes College of Music, the Eastman School of Music, the Peabody Conservatory, Yale University, and other prestigious institutions. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Voice from Yonsei University, one of the three most prestigious universities in Korea, and her Master's at the Manhattan School of Music, followed by post-graduate studies in opera performance at Yale University. Dr. Cho completed her Doctorate at the University of Memphis, where she was the recipient of the Hohenberg-Scheidt Opera Fellowship. D R . N I C O L E PA I E M E N T Dr. Nicole Paiement was initiated as an Honorary Member by the Dallas Alumnae Chapter in October. Dr. Paiement is the Artistic Director and Conductor of San Francisco's Opera Parallèle, which performs experimental operas. She also holds positions as Professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Opera. Nicole received a Bachelor's in Piano Performance with a minor in Musicology from the University of Ottawa. She also received her Master's in Conducting from McGill University in Montreal. She earned a Doctorate in Conducting with a minor in Music History from the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Paiement has also studied conducting with John Eliot Gardiner in England and Eric Leinsdorff at the Paris Conservatory. She has received several awards and honors from prestigious universities, including University of California, Eminent Professor Award (2014), and has held the Deleage Chair for New Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music since 2012. Dr. Paiement's biography includes extensive music recordings, world premiere performances, and published writings featuring articles, books, and reviews. She has conducted premieres in Seoul, Korea, Los Angeles, CA, San Francisco, CA, and Dallas, TX. In Dallas she has conducted two world premier operas: Ted Machover's science-fiction opera Death and the Powers and Joby Talbot's Everest, based on the true story of three climbers trapped on Mount Everest. Along with Dallas Opera Music Director, Emmanuel Villaume, Dr. Paiement provided leadership for e Institute for Woman Conductors, held by the Dallas Opera November 28 through December 6, 2015. Six women were chosen to conduct the Dallas Opera Orchestra and to participate in master classes and seminars. Other creative projects in 2015 included preparing the American Premiere of Tarik O'Regan's opera Heart of Darkness for Opera Parallèle, San Francisco and conducting Jake Heggie's opera Dead Man Walking in collaboration with e Broad Stage, LA Opera, and Glimmerglass Festival.
