He has degrees from University of Washington in political science and law. He served in the United States Navy and the Foreign Service. He was an attorney with the Garvey Schubert Barer law firm, and he is married to SAI Member Laureate Gloria W. Swisher, composer and editor of the current SAI Songbook. Michelle Taylor Michelle Taylor was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Sigma Iota Chapter in April. She is the Assistant Director of Operations at the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University. Prior to this position, she was As- sistant to the Dean and Hall Manager. Within the school of music, she is the head of the work-study office and organizes Gilbert Week, a program she helped to cre- ate that provides students the opportunity to talk to professionals and learn about careers in music. She holds a Bachelor's in Music and Studio Art from the State University of New York at Potsdam and a Master's in Arts Administration from New York University. Dr. William E. Trantham Dr. William E. Trantham was initiated by Hot Springs Alumnae Chapter as a Friend of the Arts in May. Dr. Trantham is known for his long career as Dean of the School of Music at Ouachita Baptist University, Arkadelphia, AR, from 1960 through 1994. During his tenure, he helped to establish the Epsilon Delta chapter of SAI, guided new construction of Mabee Fine Arts Center, and raised $200,000 for instal- lation of a Reuters organ in the concert hall of Mabee Fine Arts Center in 1988. Dr. Trantham also served as a church musician, in- cluding twenty-three years as Organist and Choirmaster at Westminster Pres- byterian Church in Hot Springs. In retirement he supports the annual Hot Springs Music Festival. Swisher Taylor Trantham The Association of Concert Bands 2017 Composition Contest This contest is intended for composers 30 and under writing music for concert band. The composition must be an original 3 to 5-minute piece for concert band at a grade level of roughly 4. The piece premieres at the annual convention of the Association of Concert Bands, May 3-7, 2017, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL by a band comprised primarily of adult musicians. The composer will receive a recording of the premier performance, an award of $1,000 and reimbursement up to $1,000 for travel expenses to attend. The Robert Campbell '40, M.S. '50, Endowed Choral Composition Prize will be awarded to the first-place winner in our annual Choral Composition Festival. Parks Leadership in Music Education Award Developed by the National Association for Music Education and Music for All, the George N. Parks Leadership in Music Education Award is named for the late George Parks, director of the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band. Considered a national authority on drum majoring, Mr. Parks led the George N. Parks Drum Major Academy, including at the Music for All Summer Symposium. The George N. Parks Award honors an exemplary music educator who embodies the characteristics and leadership that Mr. Parks showed his students every day.
