PAN PIPES • SUMMER 2016 • sai-national.org 2 S AI and PAN PIPES were honored during the annual conference of the Fraternity Communications Association (FCA) in Washington, D.C. in May. At the organization's awards banquet, FCA awarded PAN PIPES second place in the category of Writing - Persuasive/Opinion for Patroness Diana Allan's call for support for Music and Memory, a music therapy program for Alzheimer's patients. It appeared in the Summer 2015 issue of the magazine. The Fraternity Communications Association, formerly the College Fraternity Editors Association (CFEA), is composed of fraternities and sororities, affiliates, and associate members. The organization is unique within the fraternity movement in that the organization, not the individual editor, holds membership. As the first interfraternity organization, FCA launched other groups, such as the National Interfraternity Conference and Fraternity Executives Association. Each year FCA receives hundreds of entries from more than 50 of its member organizations. The best of the best are recognized during the Annual Awards Banquet on the last night of the Annual Conference, thanks to the generous support of the North-American Interfraternity Foundation (NIF). The association is proud of the long partnership it has had with the North-American Interfraternity Foundation. Every year, FCA member organizations are honored for their outstanding efforts in a variety of writing, design, and communication categories. More than just a recognition opportunity, however, the association's awards program is also a valuable teaching tool for its member organizations. Dear Readers, J ust before writing this I was compiling a few new playlists of music to use during family road trips, for summer relaxation, and for continuing study. As you can imagine, the groupings I made for my son and I differed just a bit, though I must admit I do enjoy a good dinosaur rap about velociraptors now and again. If you have young kids, or teach them, and have not checked out the stylings of the Storybots on Youtube, you are missing out! While working on all of my lists, I tried to incorporate some of the music reviewed and discussed within this issue of PAN PIPES; there are so many good ones to choose from. A little opera, a few spirituals, some 20th Century works, and many more. Here's a small sampling, that you can find on Youtube or other music sites, and listen to as you read through this issue: • Ursula Mamlok's Concerto for Oboe and Chamber Orchestra (1976/2003) • Marian Anderson's version of the spiritual ey crucified my Lord • Germaine Tailleferre's La Rue Chagrin (1955) • Gena Branscombe's I Bring You Heartsease, sung by Kathleen Shimeta • Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 16 is installment of PAN PIPES features a number of articles about composers and women in music. Performer Kathleen Shimeta shares part two in her research and passion about American composer and conductor Gena Branscombe, focusing on the group of peers she associated with that made great strides for women composers and performers. ere is also Melissa Cummins' research piece about the parody works of Germaine Tailleferre, as well as information on SAI member Augusta Cecconi-Bates' recent composing endeavors. Among the many updates and recognitions of our fraternity members, there are also the heartwarming stories of our members who not only are SAI sisters, but family members as well. You can read about two such relationships in this issue's SAI Philanthropies pages. We know there may be more of you out there who share that special double bond, and we would love to hear from you. As always, we welcome new stories to share with our readers and new personnel to volunteer their time and writing skills. Do you have an idea for a music technology article or an interview with an SAI in the field? Is there a great teaching resource or a new performing ensemble you would like to write about? If so, please contact me at SAIPanPipesEditor@gmail.com so we can discuss your potential involvement. I can't wait to hear from you!
