PAN PIPES • WINTER 2017 • sai-national.org 2 Dear Members of Sigma Alpha Iota, B e sure to be in a comfortable seat while you read this edition of PAN PIPES. Once you start reading, you won't want to put it down! There is something for everyone in this issue, from interviews about select American composers to the cultural sustainability of music to choral singing helping senior citizens. Sadly, we recently lost three important leaders for our Fraternity: Elsie Sterrenberg, former National President; Ruth Sickafus, former Vice Chairman of SAI Philanthropies, Inc. and Director of People to People; and Jean Conwell, former NVP Extension. Each woman impacted SAI in unique ways. We will miss them greatly! For our membership exam, we all learned about SAI's support of Pan's Cottage at the MacDowell Colony. In 2007, the National Executive Board and the SAI Philanthropies Board made a pilgrimage to Pan's Cottage. I was entranced by the peacefulness and serenity of both our cottage and the Colony as a whole. Currently, we are in the midst of a fundraising drive to help continue our support of Pan's Cottage. An update on our efforts is included in this issue. Because of my own visit to Pan's Cottage, I have personally issued a challenge to all members, chapters, provinces, and regions to match my own contribution of $8,000. Together we can all help to maintain our beloved Pan's Cottage at the MacDowell Colony for many future generations of artists. Now get comfy and enjoy reading, Leslie Odom Miller, National President A Word from the National President Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. is pleased to provide this resource of information about contemporary American Composers.
