PAN PIPES • SPRING 2017 • sai-national.org 4 E J K O P U Each year the Fraternity accepts grant applications for SAI booths at state music education conferences. The following reports represent some of those awarded this past year. Arizona In February 2017, the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter co-hosted a booth with the local Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia chapter at the annual Arizona Music Educators Association Conference. The purpose of the booth was to try to make connections with what the PAC lovingly calls our "Lost SAI Sisters," as well as meet the Phi Mu Alpha members in the area. We had information about both SAI and PMA available, and this year we did an online "Contact Me" sign up for anyone who requested more information about the groups. We spent two and a half days talking with many sisters, both new to the area and new to our region. Our list of sisters in the area increased by about 15 and our VP-Membership is actively keeping in touch with those on the list. Our hope is that we can affiliate a few new sisters into the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter soon. — Heather Featherstone, Phoenix Alumnae Chapter President Colorado e Colorado Springs Alumnae Chapter hosted a booth at the Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA) Conference at e Broadmoor from January 26-28. Our chapter had members there in attendance for the conference, as well as members who are not music teachers, man the table. We connected with other organizations while there, one of which was the Phi Mu Alpha Front Range Alumni Association. We did have unaffiliated sisters stop by and give us their updated contact information to send to SAI National Headquarters and to the closest alumnae chapters in Xi C Province. Sisters of other chapters stopped by to say hello as well. We believe that having a booth at the CMEA conference helped get our fraternity and chapter names out to the state, so we will continue to host a booth in upcoming years. Although not all of our members could participate, those of us who did enjoyed the experience. — Colleen Christiansen, Colorado Springs Alumnae Chapter President Florida Tampa Alumnae Chapter Sisters and Phi Mu Alpha Brothers teamed up again in honor of all things musical. We continued the tradition of co-hosting a booth at the annual Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) Professional Development Clinic-Conference in Tampa. Our fraternal collaboration has become a win-win. The Brothers, however, have long enjoyed a leg up on the girls. How so? In performance at the Conference. Yes, they have been singing on those steps — at the 2 nd -floor entrance to the exhibit hall of the Tampa Convention Center — for about 20 years. Now, that's impressive! SAI has often discussed following their lead, but the idea never materialized until Lambda Omicron Sisters at Florida International University decided to make it a reality. They gathered phone numbers, secured a definite time slot, and spread the word. Once Tampa Alumnae President Kathryn Jurado created a Facebook Event page, the excitement grew even more. Who could have imagined that our National President, Leslie Odom Miller, would join us? She did! On Friday, January 13, Leslie stepped out of the University of Florida booth to chime in on three SAI favorites: the Chorale, Pan In Canon, and The Whistle Song. We performed at 1:15 pm, right after our Phi Mu Alpha Brothers. (Maybe we should have included a variation on the tune from Annie, Get Your Gun, "Anything You Can Do, We Can Do Better!") It would have been in good fun. The popular FMEA Conference was held this year from January 11-14. Many devoted SAI collegiate and alumnae sisters from all over the state volunteered to serve, ensuring SAI's presence in the exhibit hall during open hours. Thank you to Beta Alpha, Beta Sigma, Delta Chi, Eta Pi, Lambda Omicron, Sarasota- Manatee Alumnae, and Tampa Alumnae. What a wonderful turnout for the booth and…(ta- da!)…our first ever FMEA Sister Sing-a-Long. We hope we've only just begun! — Theo Boylan, Tampa Alumnae Chapter Editor Indiana The Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA) Professional Development Conference has been hosted in Fort Wayne for the last several years.
