She played with the Rockford Symphony for twenty-two years prior to her "early" retirement to devote herself to the development of the Music Academy. Her influential cello instructors have been Arthur Zack, Carol Tarr, Raya Garbousova, and Richard Sher. Rev. Sonja E. Freeman Rev. Sonja E. Freeman was initiated as a Friend of the Arts in April by the Lambda Zeta Chapter at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas. Freeman, a vocalist, songwriter, and producer, has had many outstanding accomplishments since becoming an alumna of the Music Department's Voice Liberal Arts Program. She is a coloratura soprano known for her recent work as a guest lead and background vocalist with gospel recording artist Tonya Lewis-Taylor on her debut album Delayed But Not Denied. e lead single reached #15 on Billboard Magazine's Gospel Chart. She is founder and Pastor/Psalmist for Divine Voices World Ministries, a music and encouragement ministry, and is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) as a writer and publisher. Eileen Grycky Eileen Grycky was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Eta Rho Chapter at the University of Delaware (UD) in March. Grycky is an Associate Professor of Flute at the University of Delaware and participates in two ensembles in- residence: Christiana Winds, and the Taggart-Grycky Flute and Guitar Duo. She's also an active member of the Opera Company of Philadelphia, Delaware Symphony, and Brandywine Baroque, a period instrument ensemble in Wilmington, DE. She has been a soloist with the Delaware Symphony, Mozart Orchestra of Philadelphia, and Newark Symphony in Newark, DE, and substituted in the Philadelphia Orchestra. Professor Grycky maintains an active teaching and performing schedule, and loves and cares for all students in the UD Music Department. She is an excellent addition to the Eta Rho Chapter as a Friend of the Arts. Jaclyn Hartenberger Jaclyn Hartenberger was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Iota Zeta Chapter at the University of Georgia in November. She serves as the Associate Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Georgia. In addition to serving as the conductor for the Wind Symphony, she teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting. Dr. Hartenberger received a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to her graduate degree work, she served as a middle school and high school band director in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex for distinguished music programs. Dr. Hartenberger received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas, where she performed and recorded with the prestigious UNT Wind Symphony. Dr. David Hedgecoth The Theta Alpha Chapter at The Ohio State University initiated Dr. David Hedgecoth as a Friend of the Arts in February. Dr. Hedgecoth is an esteemed faculty member in the school of music serving as a professor of music education, conductor of ensembles, and the student teaching coordinator. A native of Jacksonville, FL, Dr. Hedgecoth earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Music Education from Florida State University in 1999 and 2003. Dr. Hedgecoth taught in the Seminole County Public School System for nine years and has served as a guest conductor/clinician for honor bands and leadership clinics across the United States. After completing his PhD in Music Education at The Ohio State University in 2012, he joined the faculty of the University of Oregon. He now presides as a professor at Ohio State and has worked closely with the sisters of Theta Alpha. Dr. Ronald Johnson The Alpha Upsilon Chapter at the University of Northern Iowa initiated Dr. Ronald Johnson as a Friend of the Arts in April. Since arriving at the University of Northern Iowa in 1982, he has been the Conductor of the Northern Iowa Wind Symphony, which he has taken on six tours to Hungary and Northern Italy, most recently in March 2016. He has served as Director of the Northern Festival of Bands, Division Chair of Ensembles and Conducting, taught various music classes, and has appeared as a guest conductor, clinician, and lecturer throughout the world. Dr. Johnson retired at the end of the 2016-17 school year, and the Alpha Upsilon chapter wished to honor him for his hard work and dedication to the arts by inviting him into the membership of SAI. Dr. Thomas Josenhans Dr. Thomas Josenhans was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Beta Epsilon Chapter at the University of Evansville in April. During his service as an Associate Professor of Music, he has also served as the Music Department Chair since 2010. Dr. Josenhans has taught a wide variety of music classes while at the university, ranging from Pedagogy of the Clarinet to Music Business and Technology. Dr. Josenhans plays a constant, active role in the fostering of music in the Evansville community, serving as principal clarinetist of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra since 2006, and as a substitute for the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra in Owensboro, Kentucky, since 2005. Dr. Josenhans has held clinics, master classes, and given solo recitals at numerous universities around the country. Dr. Julie Derges Kastner Dr. Julie Derges Kastner was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by Beta Pi Chapter at the University of Houston in April. She is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at the Moores School of Music. She received her doctorate in music education at Michigan State University, where she completed her Master's of Music Education degree. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign.
