sai-national.org • SUMMER 2017 • PAN PIPES 3 Dear Readers, S ummer is traditionally the time when we try to take a break, a vacation, a moment to reflect and enjoy some fun before diving back into our busy work or school lives. For my family, this summer has included packing up our home in North Carolina and moving across the country to the new adventures Colorado will bring. Along the way, we paused to enjoy some sights and historical landmarks, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Andrew Jackson's Hermitage in Nashville, the Arch and a Cardinals game in St. Louis, and President Truman's Library and some pretty tasty BBQ in Kansas City. We enjoyed sampling the sights as we traveled, as well as the variety of music on the radio, and it made an otherwise stressful move a little more enjoyable. is issue of Pan Pipes is a little bit like our trip was: a sampling of what our membership and music has to offer, as well as a bit of history thrown in. e history of our Fraternity is always a pleasure to share with our readers, as Sigma Alpha Iota has had a rich and active 114 years of existence. We have a "then and now" perspective about our own National Headquarters building, including the types of things that have been happening since it's purchase and dedication in 2005. ere is also a peek inside the day-to-day life of a composer at e MacDowell Colony and Pan's Cottage, offered to us by Andrea Clearfield, in support of our endeavor to fund the upkeep of the cottage for future artists to use. Summer is also a time of renewal and an excellent time for musicians to evaluate their performing practices and physical health. In "Protecting Our Musical Bodies," Dr. Mary Alice Druhan outlines a number of common playing concerns and ways to alleviate or combat injuries, while establishing healthy musical habits. In that same spirit of renewal, we have stories of what our membership and chapters have been working on over the course of this past spring; read about their efforts and perhaps you will find a new activity you would like to pursue or support in the future! As always, we welcome new music related stories to share with our PAN PIPES readers and new volunteers to write them. Do you have an idea for an article, review, or interview? Is there a research topic or a local effort that you would like to write about? If so, please contact me at SAIPanPipesEditor@gmail.com so we can discuss your potential involvement. I can't wait to hear from you! SAI Roses, Christine Bruns Editor EDITOR'S NOTES From top: The Hermitage, Country Music Hall of Fame, St. Louis from Busch Stadium, and Joe's Kansas City BBQ.
