Over these past years the local community has responded with donations of many instruments, some of which were not usable or repairable. The project has been very popular and this year the chapter noted two challenges: the need to raise more money to fund the necessary instrument repairs for those that could be fixed and how to disperse those instruments that were deemed " beyond repair." An ingenious solution was presented by Del Hungerford, the chapter president - make lamps from the unusable instruments and then auction them to the highest bidders at annual musicales. The whole chapter was involved with the dual project, some working on creating lamps from unusable instruments and others locating places to donate the ones that were refurbished. Completed lamps were offered to the public in a silent auction at the chapter's annual musicale. The money they earned from the auction went to repair six instruments. Those instruments were donated to band programs in local community schools in Idaho. P A S A D E N A D e l t a A , R e g i o n I T he Pasadena Alumnae Chapter held a scholarship competition for area college students at Los Angeles Valley College. Applicants performed a 10-minute audition in front of a panel of three Pasadena Chapter judges. The judges selected the winners and the chapter awarded four scholarships, two for $1,000 and two for $500. The winners performed in a public recital at the Pasadena Public Library. This scholarship program was a wonderful way to help young college musicians continue their music education. B L O O M I N G T O N B e t a A , R e g i o n V T he Bloomington (IN) Alumnae Chapter visited a local Head Start school. Their president wrote this about their project: "Members of our chapter visited four classes (72 children in total) at the Lindbergh Head Start Preschool in Bloomington. We sang songs and played our instruments for the children. The children enjoyed "marching" to violin music and listening to beautiful flute and harpsichord music. Several children's songs were also performed on the clarinet and violin, including Row, Row, Row Your Boat, You Are My Sunshine, and the theme from SpongeBob Squarepants. The children loved trying out the many instruments we brought for them to play: violin, bells, hand drums, snare drum, and harpsichord." SAI members led the singing of the National Anthem and God Bless America with everyone present being encouraged to sing along. It was so well received the presiding judge and deputy clerk invited the chapter to return for the next ceremony 6 months later. The chapter members who attended expressed that the experience was deeply moving and the Judge and Deputy Clerk also expressed great appreciation for the chapter's involvement (see full article).
