PAN PIPES • WINTER 2018 • sai-national.org 2 A WORD FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT Dear Members of Sigma Alpha Iota, S AI -"So Near, So Dear" I cannot think of a song, phrase, or concept that epitomizes our members' feelings about our Fraternity more. Hence, its selection as the theme for our National Convention to be held this summer in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa July 26-30. Workshops and performers are in the process of being selected, keynote speakers are being contacted, and the excitement is building. Have you made your plans to attend? I hope so, as this looks to be another wonderful, memorable event with plenty of learning opportunities and music making. I am pleased to announce that our performer for the SAI Philanthropies, Inc. Benefit Concert will be Dr. Christopher Kachian, a National Arts Associate. His extensive repertoire as a guitarist is sure to be a crowd pleaser for all generations. Please see page 4 in this edition of Pan Pipes for more details of his amazing career. In addition to information on Convention, this issue contains an enlightening article about women jazz composers. ese little-known artists have made an amazing impact on the world of jazz and deserve to be recognized for their contributions to a male-dominated genre. I know you will also enjoy reading about Jayne I. Hanlin's visit to the Robert-Schumann-Haus in Germany. e pictures do not do it justice, and a trip should be on everyone's "bucket list." See you in Scottsdale in July! Fraternally, Leslie Odom Miller, National President Dear Readers, I t's a new year, with new beginnings, new opportunities, and oen, new resolutions. My 2018 resolutions include doing daily pushups (so far, so good), reading 60 books this year (I've finished four, as of writing this), and to listen to new music as oen as I can. Luckily, this Pan Pipes issue is getting me off to a great start on the last one, with a nice variety of music to pick from: jazz, Chinese opera, Classical guitar, Romantic pieces by Schumann and Strauss, and even some '70s brass band. How ever you listen to music in your home, I encourage you to follow up each article with a little listening of your own. In addition, this is the 69th year that Pan Pipes has published an update for the SAI Composers Bureau, highlighting premiers, concerts, and special projects of our living composers. e yearly update provides a peek inside the contemporary music scene and is an excellent resource for finding new music to perform and study. If you know of an American composer who should be included in the bureau, please have them contact its Director, Dr. Susan Cohn Lackman. We continue to publish this compilation as a separate digital publication. Be sure to visit SAI's website in mid-February for your copy at: www.sai-national.org Would you or someone you know like to share an article, review, interview, or personal story in Pan Pipes? We welcome new music related items to share with our Pan Pipes readers. Please contact me at SAIPanPipesEditor@gmail.com so we can discuss your potential involvement. I can't wait to hear from you!
