PAN PIPES • SPRING 2018 • sai-national.org 4 MUSIC EDUCATION CONFERENCES GEORGIA e Statesboro Alumnae Chapter represented Sigma Alpha Iota at the Georgia Music Educators Association in the Classic Center in Athens, GA on January 25-27. For years the Statesboro Chapter has made it an annual project to represent SAI at the convention. We are grateful to SAI for supporting our chapter in this endeavor by giving us a Music Education Grant to partially fund our booth. President Alice Schmid reserved the backdrop display from Georgia Southern University's Library. Cindy Strickland handled the set-up and take-down of the booth, and an online sign-up was used for volunteer coordination. It was a smooth process thanks to good team work. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia once again joined us in sharing the cost and space. ey are a welcome partner. e booth had many visitors and it was a great time visiting with sisters old and new. Representing our Fraternity's booth were sisters from various chapters across the state. Particularly helpful were the sisters from the Iota Zeta chapter in Athens. ey were both numerous and willing to help in any way needed. Our booth display included an easel with our coat of arms and a backdrop with pictures representing all of the Georgia chapters in Tau A and Tau C; these surrounded a map of Georgia labeled with the locations of the chapters. A welcome addition to the map was the newly rechartered chapter from Kennesaw University, Eta Delta. Our banner was presented on the outside of the table and materials from National Headquarters were displayed, along with the sign-in sheets for both collegiate and alumnae sisters. A photo album of pictures from the chapters (current photos added yearly) and brochures from both Atlanta and Statesboro Alumnae Chapters were also included. Fieen collegiate sisters and 41 alumnae sisters signed-in at the booth. rough the years we have enjoyed implementing this project and have always invited the other chapters in the state to join us in manning the booth. is year was the best ever in having this shared participation. We are hoping it is a precedent that will continue. — Cindy Strickland, Projects Chair Statesboro Alumnae Chapter KANSAS e Kansas Music Educators Association conference was quite the setting for our SAI Booth! We certainly attracted much positive attention in the Exhibit Hall. e conference, running from February 22-24, is always a highlight of the year for Kansas Music Educators. Donna Atkeson, Jeanne Shoemaker, and Mily Montanez braved icy roads to set up the booth on ursday aernoon. We made a few additions over last year's booth, adding a map of Kansas and a map of the United States so that SAI attendees could pin their collegiate chapters on either the Kansas map or the national map. All collegiate chapters were represented, as well as inactive chapters. Alumnae Chapters also had a few pins. Mily Montanez and Stevie Phelps, Wichita alums, furnished the maps, which were presented on two art easels. ese maps served as a conversation starter so we found many area SAIs who were not affiliated with an alumnae chapter, giving us a solid tool for connecting and recruiting! eta B Province Officer Audrey omas stopped by the booth many times and greeted visiting SAIs. e booth was colorful, exciting, and surrounded with bright smiles, laughter, badges, red and white, greetings, and pictures!! We had t-shirts designed by Oklahoma State graduate and Wichita alumna Emily Henning Taylor. e bright red shirts had Sigma Alpha Iota scripted on the front, and on the back was our motto, 'Vita Brevis, Ars Longa' within an outline of the state of Kansas. Our hope is to wear them to represent our state at SAI's National Convention. Mily Montanez created a poster advertising the Wichita Alumnae Facebook Page. Emily and Mily collaborated on a trifold brochure with pictures and steps on how to join our J eanne Vance Shoemaker, President of the Wichita Alumnae Chapter, presented at the Kansas Music Educators Association Conference in late February. Her presentation was titled "The Next Generation: Mentoring a Student Teacher." This clinic was designed for new and current Cooperating Teachers who mentor Teachers. Topics included the Cooperating Teacher/Student Teacher process and what considerations are made in the placement, best practices of successful placements, mentoring techniques, lesson planning, Student Teacher assessments including Kansas State Department of Education assessments and Wichita State University College of Education assessments, and finally, the role of the University Supervisor. Jeanne is in her 6 th year as Assistant Professor in Music Education serving as the Placement Coordinator and University Supervisor for Student Teachers. She completed her undergraduate and graduate work in music education at Wichita State University (WSU). Jeanne taught vocal music for 21 years, mostly at the high school level, before returning to WSU and earning a Master in Education in Supervision and Administration in 1998. She was a high school assistant principal for Wichita Public Schools for 10 years. She retired in 2008 but was often called to fill in as principal or assistant principal in numerous middle and high schools. And when needed, Jeanne filled in for long term choral positions in the district. She brings a distinct perspective as an administrator and classroom teacher to her University Supervisor role.
