PAN PIPES • SUMMER 2018 • sai-national.org 22 T E R R Y E W E L L Terry Ewell was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Nu Delta Chapter at Towson University in May. Terry Ewell is Professor of Online Instruction and Bassoon at Towson University's Department of Music. He currently performs as Principal Bassoon with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, the Howard County Concert Orchestra, and the Bach Concert Series Orchestra. For seven years, he served as Principal Bassoon of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Later he was Principal Bassoon of the Wheeling Symphony and Acting Principal Bassoon of the West Virginia Symphony. He has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist he has performed with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the International Double Reed Society 2004 Conference Orchestra, and with several regional orchestras in the state of Washington. His performances as a chamber musician have been heard in Germany, Hong Kong, mainland China, Portugal, and throughout the United States. He has recorded for Musical Heritage Society, Hong Kong Records, Pickwick Records, and Cambria Records. He also recorded as an orchestral member with the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra for Naxos. Dr. Ewell is a pioneer in the application of MIDI, MP3, and online video for bassoon instruction. His writings appear in over a dozen journals, principally e Double Reed, the International Double Reed Journal, and Scrapes. He has taught at the Hong Kong Conservatory of Music, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Pacific Lutheran University, West Virginia University, and Towson University. Dr. Ewell was Chairperson of the Division of Music at West Virginia University for five years and subsequently served from 2000-2009 as Chairperson of the Department of Music at Towson University. Dr. Ewell served four years as President of the International Double Reed Society and presently serves as an accreditation evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music. Starting in June 2017, he assumed the position of President of the Bach in Baltimore Society. He earned his Bachelor's of Music magna cum laude, Master's in Music eory , and Doctorate in Music eory from the University of Washington. Dr. Jeremy Benson Dr. Jeremy Benson was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the eta Beta Chapter at Jacksonville State University in April. Dr. Benson joined the faculty at the David L. Walters Department of Music in the fall of 2011 as Professor of Flute and Music History Studies. He has taught at Rutgers University as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and is currently teaching primary applied lessons for flute and Graduate level music history classes at Jacksonville State University. He has given multiple masterclasses at the University of Alabama, e National Flute Convention, and the Florida Flute Convention. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Jacksonville State University. He continued his studies at Florida State University with a Master's in Music Performance and with a special studies in e Evolution of the Flute Sound from the Baroque Period to the Present. Dr. Benson received his doctorate in Musical Arts from Rutgers, e State University of New Jersey where he studied music performance, music history, and orchestral performance and literature. As an active soloist, chamber musician, and adjudicator, Dr. Benson was named a First Prize Winner at the Alexander & Buono International Flute Competition, and he performed his New York City debut solo recital at Weill Recital Hall/ Carnegie Hall in October 2011. He was also the first prize winner at the Kentucky Flute Society's Concerto Competition in 2010. He has served on adjudication panels for several national flute competitions and master classes, in addition to being a lecturer and performer at national and regional flute conventions. He has been the Gadsden Symphony's principal flutist. Dr. Benson is the leading researcher and expert about flute compositions by the 20th/21st century Japanese-French composer Yuko Uѐbayashi, and his doctoral research serves as the only primary source about Uѐbayashi and her original flute compositions. Kathryn Daniel Kathryn Daniel was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Beta eta Chapter at Sam Houston State University in March. Daniel is a Professor of Flute at Sam Houston State University. She has an active performing career and has appeared as a flute and piccolo soloist in many concerts throughout the United States. She served as principal flutist, section leader, and soloist with the United States Navy Band, Washington, DC, performing in and around Washington as well as on national concert tours. She was a soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra in Symphony Hall and has performed in New York City at Carnegie Hall. Daniel has been a member of numerous professional ensembles in the Washington area, including the Mid-Atlantic Chamber Orchestra, the Maryland Festival Orchestra, and the Annapolis Chamber Orchestra. She completed several seasons with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and has performed with the Fairfax Symphony, National Women's Symphony, the Prince George's Philharmonic, and on concert tours with the United States Air Force Band. She has remained active as a clinician at Texas Bandmasters Association, the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the International Clarinet Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and Texas Flute Society Conventions. She has been named to Who's Who Among America's Teachers and Who's Who in America. Dr. Alan Goldspiel Dr. Alan Goldspiel was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Mu Eta Chapter at University of Montevallo in March. Chair of the Department of Music and Professor of Music, Dr. Goldspiel is a world-class guitarist and has performed world premieres at New York's Carnegie and CAMI Halls He has DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS NATIONAL ARTS ASSOCIATE a man or woman who is nationally recognized for distinguished contribution to the arts FRIEND OF THE ARTS a man or woman who is supportive of and actively involved in the arts at a local or regional level Benson Daniel
