Mark Braun fundraises for organizations by taking sponsorships as he rides his piano bike across states and across the country, stopping to play boogie woogie music and speak on the importance of being healthy and active. Our committee found a Title I school where a Pontchartrain Chapter member is the music teacher and sponsored Mr. B's visit. In searching for funding, we received a $500 Chapter Outreach Grant in Summer 2017. We set about getting the balance of the funding, and procured it from the school's PTA and Great Lakes Performing Artist Associates, a local philanthropic organization. Lisa Root, the music teacher, prepared students for Mr. B's visit by teaching them boogie woogie style, composition, improvisation, and making Mr. B the "Musician of the Month." On April 25, Mr. B rode into the school gym on his bicycle pulling a cart and piano — all 650 pounds! He played many musical selections, composed a piece for them on the spot, and performed while the students danced and had a great time.
