Fall 2018 32 PAN PIPES awards awards awards F r a t e r n i t y 2018 SAI T his past year the Pontchartrain Alumnae Chapter faced much adversity and hardship with the unexpected death of the chapter treasurer, the sudden passing of the VP-Ritual's husband, and serious injury of their VP-Programs. Their Province Officer, Bernadette Skodak, wrote the following about the chapter: "With each of these challenges, members of the Pontchartrain Alumnae have supported their sisters and have stepped up to fill in roles. One member stepped up immediately to take over the treasurer duties, ensuring that the chapter's financials would remain in good condition. Two members stepped up for the VP-Programs, who was in the midst of planning the annual joint musicale with the Detroit Alumnae Chapter. Sisters provided support for the family of the VP-Ritual and continue to do so." Despite everything that happened, Pontchartrain continued to conduct business. They completed a project for which they received an SAI Philanthropies Outreach Grant and hosted Alpha A Province Day. For the Province Day service project the chapter extended an invitation to all attendees to donate used iPods, iPads, headphones, music gift cards, and other items for Music and Memory project at a local nursing home. According to their Province Officer, not only was Province Day one of the best in recent years, the chapter exceeded all expectations on gifts given to the nursing facility. They also contributed $200 to the Pan's Cottage Campaign and another $300 to SAI Philanthropies. Stovall. Janis Braun-Levine read the article about Music & Memory in the Spring 2017 Pan Pipes and was inspired to organize an Alpha A Province donation drive. Music & Memory is a non-profit organization that seeks to use music to help people with degenerative diseases and cognitive/physical challenges. Janis gathered a committee which resulted in a collection of 100 CDs, 4 wireless headsets, 10 wired headsets, 1 iPod, 1 iPod cable, 1 iPhone cable, 2 charger cubes, and an iTunes gift card being sent to the Bay Bluffs Medical Care facility in Harbor Springs, Michigan. The thank you letter the chapter received from Bay Bluffs notes that Pontchartrain helped them to provide a "home away from home" for residents, and are "amazed at how much community support" they receive.
