PAN PIPES Winter 2019 5 MUSIC NOTES W illiam Frampton and SAI Martha Frampton, his mother, (a Delta Gamma initiate and Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter member) are two of the founders of Music at Bunker Hill, a nonprofit chamber music series in Sewell, New Jersey. e October 2018 program contained two works by composer ea Musgrave, an Honorary Member of SAI and close friend of William: From One to Another for viola and tape (1970) and Sunrise for flute, viola, and harp (2009). ea and her husband Peter Mark worked with the performers in Manhattan prior to the performance. In his introductory remarks, Frampton explained that Ms. Musgrave had composed From One to Another for her husband. e viola Frampton has played on for the last nine years has been graciously on loan by Peter Mark, and even though the work was new to Frampton, Ms. Musgrave likes to say "the viola already knows the piece." e taped viola sounds were made using that same viola in 1970, at a time when if you wanted a distant sound effect, you had to put the microphone and viola at opposite ends of a long hallway. Effects that today can be easily accomplished with computer soware required specialized equipment found only in the most advanced sound studios. It was an eerie experience to hear the present-day performance backed by a 48 year-old soundtrack, with the same distinctive sound of this 165 yr-old viola. Ms. Musgrave's work sounds fresh and innovative, easily standing the test of time just as she has. Honorary Member Thea Musgrave at 90 As a recent graduate at the University of Denver, I had the honor and privilege to study abroad at Berklee College of Music at the Valencia, Spain campus. I was accepted into the Masters in Music for Scoring For Film, Television, and Video Games major (or SFTV for short). During my time there, I met and was taught by industry professionals in both the European film industry as well as the US industry. e program itself was extraordinarily diverse; my program of thirty-one students included attendees from a total of twenty-one countries. e final project (Culmination Experience or C.E.) involved recording with a live orchestra at the AIR Studios in London, while also completing many additional recording sessions, both live and remote, featuring musicians from Spain and the Budapest Art Orchestra. e courses were deeply immersive and furthered my study into the importance of not just composition, but the technology and programming behind it. e courses included: Recording, Editing, and Mixing for Film; Advanced Video Game Scoring Techniques; Conducting for Recording Sessions; Narrative Analysis; Dramatic Orchestration; and Tech in Media. Although my adventure has not yet ended at Berklee, with my graduation scheduled for July, I learned a great deal about what kinds of sounds and programming create a great mockup, networking within the Berklee community, and last but not least, where I am and where I can grow from here. ank you, SAI Philanthropies, for awarding me the $3,000 International Study Grant! — Julie McCarthy On Studying Abroad in Spain
