Winter 2019 16 PAN PIPES SAIS IN ACTION On November 11, 2018 the Iota Zeta chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota held its fourth annual Dreaming of the Redcoat Band Day. e event was inspired by the book Dreaming of the Redcoat Band by Richard Gnann, a children's book about joining the University of Georgia's Redcoat Marching Band. Iota Zeta alumna, Lauren Reid, shared her reason for starting the event in 2015: "e Redcoats have been the strongest and most supportive community I've been a part of, and I wanted others to have the chance to share in that joy. I wanted adults to get the chance to try something they believed was too far gone from their reach, and I wanted to continue to foster a love for music in those that were just starting out in their journey." Attendees of all ages come from across the state of Georgia to join the Redcoat Marching Band for a day of related activities. A typical day may include learning the basic skills required for performing in a marching band, a brief introduction to the different instrument families, experiences solely related to the Redcoat organization, and interaction with band members and SAI sisters. Sister and current Co- Philanthropy Chair, Hannah Shuman, explained why Iota Zeta chose this event for Iota Zeta's fall philanthropy: "I wanted to continue the tradition of Dreaming of the Redcoat Band Day this year because it allows us to raise money to support music in our community while passing on the musical traditions we are a part of." e event began with ice breaker activities lead by two of our sisters, meant to introduce the attendees to one another and encourage them to feel like they are part of the Redcoat family. Attendees were then split into groups and visited stations across the field. e stations included an instrument petting zoo, uniform try-on and photo booth, Redcoat Band Chant, conducting, and marching. Aerward, attendees were treated to snacks while listening to a reading of Dreaming of the Redcoat Band by author Richard Gnann and a performance by the Redcoat Band Derbies. Sisters from the Redcoat Band props crew also gave a speech about their position in the band and how important their role is for a band as large as this one. Attendees then moved into sectionals where they learned stands music, such as the Bulldog March Medley, Glory, Go Georgia Bulldogs, and Krypton. e event ended with a full band rehearsal, a Redcoat Band chant competition, and a mock Dawg Walk featuring Hairy Dawg.
