PAN PIPES Winter 2019 17 SAIS IN ACTION saw 87 participants and raised over $1,500 for Athens Master Chorale of Athens, GA, and SAI Philanthropies, Inc. All in attendance were encouraged to bring their own instruments and musical experience, but if they had neither, they were given kazoos to learn the music on. Katie Beth Fowler acted as kazoo section leader this past event and shared about her experience: "I enjoyed [being kazoo section leader] because it opened up the world of marching band and music to younger kids who don't yet know how to play an instrument. My favorite moment was seeing the kazoo choir play along with the rest of the band as we cheered on Hairy Dawg during Dawg Walk." Making this allowance encouraged more people to attend the event and brought music to lives that previously had little. Dreaming of the Redcoat Band Day has grown to mean so much to the sisters of the Iota Zeta chapter and has shaped the chapter's attitude toward recruitment, as well as music. Emma Lowery elaborated on what the event means to her: "[Dreaming of the Redcoat Band Day] shows kids that music affects them in their daily life. It isn't just a class or a hobby. It shows them how music can change their life, take them from a bad place to a good place, shows them a path they need to take…When I asked if [the cymbals players] had questions about the music, one boy asked, 'Can you tell us what being in band is like? For you?' He wanted a personal testament. I told him about my best friends, my roommates, and my future husband whom met through Redcoats. I got to share with them specifically how much music shaped my life… One of my best friends is a Redcoat whom I taught at Dreaming of the Redcoat Band Day last year. Now she's trying to go through SAI process to become my sister." is event is so powerful for our chapter because of the importance of football on our campus and the number of SAIs in the Redcoat Band. Although many sisters in our chapter are not in the marching band, they acknowledge the importance of it on campus and within our fraternity. ere is nothing more powerful than doing service through music, and our chapter and Redcoat sisters have learned that lesson through this event. Stephanie Cannon summed up the event: "e students we saw on Sunday are the future of Sigma Alpha Iota, and from the spirit and excitement I saw in them, I can safely say that the future of the Iota Zeta chapter is a bright one." — Submitted by Mandy Gillis, Iota Zeta Chapter Editor
