Among many other items available for purchase in the well-stocked Museum Shop is my brother's above-mentioned 1991 CD recording with a reproduction of the famous family portrait on the cover of the liner notes. For my twelh birthday long ago, Malcolm gave me a gi from Salzburg. Hanging on a delicate chain necklace was the image of an angel on a gold disk. He told me the angel was on the base of Mozart's statue there, fittingly on the Mozartplatz. At that moment, I knew I wanted to visit Salzburg one day and see the angel for myself. e first time I did was forty years ago, and ever since then, any trip to Salzburg would be incomplete without going to Mozartplatz. In 1842—in the presence of Mozart's two sons—Ludwig Schwanthaler's bronze statue of their father was unveiled. On my recent trip, I discovered that on each of the four faces of the pedestal is a unique image in relief. e eagle with the lyre symbolizes the apotheosis (or perfect example) of music. Two boys and a girl singing and playing music represent concert and chamber music. Two females with a mask and lyre denote operas and Singspiels. My angel stands for church music. Next time I am in Salzburg, I'll pay my respects to all members of this quartet of reliefs on Mozart's monument. Jayne I.
