Summer 2019 2 PAN PIPES Dear Members of Sigma Alpha Iota, S ummertime presents us with the opportunity to reflect on the past Fraternity year. Did we meet our goals? What went well and what can we improve upon? Those are just a few of the questions the National Executive Board will consider during our annual summer meeting as we prepare for the upcoming Fraternity year. The middle year of our triennium truly is the kickoff of excitement which culminates in our National Convention in 2021. In reading through this edition of Pan Pipes, I hope you will recognize familiar faces among our contributors. Those include Dr. Deborah Volker, former National Vice President, Ritual and Fraternity Education, who writes about various job opportunities in the armed forces and Arlene Jospe Veron, former Chairman of SAI Philanthropies, Inc. who does a fabulous job as the Bold Notes Project Director. I continue to be impressed with the accomplishments of our members, both collegiate and alumnae. SAI takes great pride in their accomplishments as they continue to make a major impact on the musical world around us. We send congratulations to each for their continued success! In this issue, I must also highlight the review on Samuel Adler's memoir, Building Bridges with Music: Stories from a Composer's Life. While I was working on my doctorate at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, Dr. Adler was a constant presence around the school. In fact, I was selected to play on the world premiere for one of his chamber pieces. As part of that premiere, Dr. Adler flew us from Rochester to New York City. What an amazing experience to go to New York City with a living American composer to perform his work. This all happened decades ago, but I still remember that experience as if it was just yesterday. As our beloved Fraternity grows by leaps and bounds, we must increase our support system at National Headquarters as well. What a wonderful problem to have! The National Executive Board is excited to officially announce our search for an Assistant Executive Director. For more information on this position, as well as deadlines and requested application materials, please see page 3 of this edition of Pan Pipes and/or our national webpage. Enjoy your summer as you start preparations for another exciting year in SAI! Fraternally, Leslie Odom Miller, National President A WORD FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT EDITOR'S NOTES Dear Readers, F or a number of years now, summer has been a time of great change for my family. As a spouse of a military musician, every other year has seen me involved in packing up our lives to move to a new location. This time around, we are transitioning from Colorado to Washington state. Not only will we experience a 6000 foot change in elevation, but we'll also get our first chance to explore the great Pacific Northwest. It's another opportunity for us to broaden our horizons on so many levels, with all of the new cultural aspects and relationships that it will entail. This edition of PAN PIPES is full of articles about fellow musicians and SAI members experiencing new things as well. A number of composers, educators, performers, administrators, and supporters of the arts share their stories, experiences, and accomplishments with us. We have also shared some great full length book reviews for your consideration, to help you broaden your knowledge base, and included some upcoming musical opportunities towards the end of the issue. As always, PAN PIPES welcomes input from our readers on possible article topics and new submissions. I am also looking for a few dedicated volunteers interested in reviewing new music related books and CDs for future issues. If you are interested and able to commit for at least one year (four issues), please contact me at SAIPanPipesEditor@gmail.com with a brief example of your writing style. I look forward to hearing from and working with you! SAI Roses, Christine Bruns, Editor
