Matthew Holzner Matthew Holzner was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Theta Omega Chapter at Texas State University in April. Holzner serves as Lecturer in Music and Assistant Director of Bands at Texas State University. His responsibilities include conducting the Concert Band, assisting with the Bobcat Marching Band and Bobcat Basketball Band, teaching instrumental conducting, and supervising student teachers. He holds a Master of Music degree in Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a Bachelor of Music Education and Conducting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has studied tuba performance with Mark Moore and Daniel Perantoni. Prior to Texas State, Holzner served as the Director of Bands at Mendota Township High School in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Under his direction, ensembles at Mendota received numerous Superior ratings at the IHSA State and Solo/Ensemble contests. Holzner has served as a contributing author to the GIA Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series and assisted in the filming of GIA series The Marching Band Director's Video Toolbox. Holzner served on several committees for ILMEA, and regularly served as adjudicator for IHSA and IMEA festivals and auditions. His professional memberships include the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, the National Association for Music Education, and the Texas Music Educators Association. Sally Johnson Sally Johnson was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Lambda Phi Chapter at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in May. Johnson is an alumna of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, class of 2005. In her time at the University, she majored in Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies and also Sociology. In addition to her coursework, she was a member of the cymbal section in the UMass Drumline. She returned to UMass in 2008 and has been the cymbal tech for the UMass Drumline ever since. As a cymbal tech, she works with the cymbal line throughout the marching band season. For her continued service to the band and the community, she was inducted into the Minuteman Band Hall of Fame in 2016. In addition to helping with the band, she also works, takes classes, and does what she can with volunteering and raising money for charity, oen through running marathons. e Lambda Phi chapter also helped Sally with a campus-wide fundraiser, where all proceeds went to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. Dr. Tonya Mitchell-Spradlin Dr. Tonya Mitchell-Spradlin was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Theta Chi Chapter at the University of South Carolina in April. In her time at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Mitchell-Spradlin has excelled in her positions of Assistant Director of Bands and Associate Director of Athletic Bands. Through teaching the University Bands and numerous classes including Instrumental Conducting, Organization and Administration of Music Programs, and Marching Band Techniques, Dr. Mitchell-Spradlin has become a role model and inspiration for the students at the university. Dr. Mitchell- Spradlin also teaches courses in the music education department and oversees student teachers. Prior to her appointment at USC, she served as interim Director of Athletic Bands at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, GA, and spent 4 years as band director at Chamblee Charter High School in Chamblee, GA. She received her Bachelor of Music Education degree with a minor in wind conducting from Indiana University, where she was also drum major of the Marching Hundred. She holds a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Georgia, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting degree from the University of Kansas. Dr. Mitchell-Spradlin is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, and an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma. Dr. Mitchell-Spradlin is a frequent adjudicator, clinician, and speaker. As a proponent of new music, she led the consortium and premiere of Aaron Perrine's Beneath a Canvas of with the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble to complete her doctoral studies. Her research on Joan Tower's Fanfares for the Uncommon Woman is published in the Alta Musica journal; she also presented this research at the International Society for the Promotion of Wind Band in Oberwölz, Austria. Additionally, Dr. Mitchell- Spradlin serves as New Music Editor for the Women Band Director's International Journal. As a champion for women in music, she was honored to speak in the 2018 Tau Beta Sigma Women in Music series. She embodies what it means to be a strong and passionate woman in the world of music. To the Theta Chi chapter members, she is a positive influence on their professionalism, confidence, and musicianship. Dr. Jaime Namminga Dr. Jaime Namminga was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Sigma Omega Chapter at Susquehanna University in May. Dr. Namminga, lecturer in music and staff pianist at Susquehanna University, received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Sioux Falls, SD, studying under Carol Flower. Namminga went on to receive her Master of Music degree in collaborative piano from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where she studied with Dr. Allison Gagnon, and was awarded "Outstanding Performer" and "Outstanding Leadership" by the UNCSA faculty. Namminga was a lecturer and staff pianist at Valley City State University, North Dakota for four years before pursuing her doctorate. She graduated from Arizona State University in spring 2016, earning her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in collaborative piano, studying under Dr. Andrew Campbell. Dr. Namminga has brought collaborative skills and abilities to student and faculty recitals, as well as ensemble performances. She received a Namminga has been rehearsal accompanist and coach for various opera and theatre productions, a dance and choral accompanist at several universities, an adjudicator for concerto and composition competitions, and has performed on numerous recitals with noted performers such as Wesley Baldwin and Dennis AsKew.
