Fall 2019 30 PAN PIPES 2019 SAI Annual Awards Fraternity COLLEGIATE SERVICE PROJECT AWARDS was intended to reinforce the importance of music education in school curriculum. A L P H A University of Michigan, Alpha A , Region VII In October of 2018, Alpha Chapter was awarded a $1,500 grant from their school to fund several service projects for their fraternity year. They gave various music workshops and recitals around the Ann Arbor community ranging from senior centers, hospitals, schools, and homeless shelters. The highlight project of the year was a collaboration with the University of Michigan Aphasia Program, where the chapter members hosted sing-along concerts during the patients' lunch hour. Music has been scientifically proven to cross the hemispheres of the brain creating new neural pathways for language. Unfortunately, this specific aphasia clinic does not have the funds to hire a music therapist. Therefore, the chapter volunteered their services. Themes were selected for each sing-along by the patients to encourage their participation and chapter members donated their time on a monthly basis throughout the year. It was incredible to witness the patients' faces light up when they heard a song they remembered and were able to sing along to it.
