PAN PIPES Fall 2019 53 D R . JA M I E - R O S E G UA R R I N E Dr. Jamie-Rose Guarrine was initiated as a Member Laureate by the Lambda Phi Chapter at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in May. Dr. Guarrine's career in music began at Illinois Wesleyan University, where she received her Bachelors of Music Education and was initiated into SAI by the Sigma Alpha chapter. She pursued a Masters of Music at the University-Wisconsin Madison and later graduated with her DMA in vocal performance. Dr. Guarrine broke into the opera scene in 2005 when she won first prize at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and secured an apprenticeship through the American Young Artists Program. Since then, Dr. Guarrine has earned acclaim as a vibrant soprano soloist, performing on the stages of the Los Angeles Opera, Minnesota Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, The National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, and the Santa Fe Symphony, among many others. She is well-recognized for her portrayals of Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte. In recent seasons, Guarrine performed with Opera Omaha as Poppea in Handel's Agrippina, the Minnesota Opera as the Fiakermilli in Richard Strauss' Arabella, and as the title role in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at Opera Saratoga, New York. Her performance repertoire ranges from the baroque, such as the Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and Keiser's The Fortunes of King Croesus, to modern works such as the roles of Xanthe/Aphrodite in Mark Adamo's Lysistrata and Maria Celeste in Philip Glass' Galileo Galilei. Current and recent projects include Handel's Messiah with the Jacksonville Symphony and Duke Chapel Choir, the role of Fury in the world premiere of Julian Wachner's Rev. 23 at the PROTOTYPE Festival NYC, a debut with the White Snake Projects in Boston, performing with Trinity Wall Street as Iphis in Handel's Jephtha, joining Smith College for the Brahms Requiem, and returning to the Florentine Opera of Milwaukee singing the role of Pamina in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. In 2015, Dr. Guarrine joined the University of Massachusetts Amherst faculty as an assistant voice professor, additionally teaching sophomore year diction and assisting in the UMass Opera Workshop. For many music majors, Dr. Guarrine has been a warm and encouraging presence, offering her time and expertise to all. The Lambda Phi chapter is also very fortunate to have Dr. Guarrine as their chapter advisor. D R . M A L L O R Y T H O M P S O N Dr. Mallory Thompson was initiated as a Member Laureate by the Beta Chapter at Northwestern University in April. Dr. Thompson is an alumna of the Beta Chapter at Northwestern University and is incredibly dedicated to her profession, specifically at her alma mater. As the keynote speaker at the 2018 Gamma A Province Day, Dr. Thompson spoke about the challenges she faced entering the music field as a woman. Despite these challenges, her drive has helped her succeed throughout her life. Dr. Thompson is director of bands, professor of music, coordinator of the conducting program, and holds the John W. Beattie Chair of Music at Northwestern University. In 2003 she was named a Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence. As the third person in the university's history to hold the director of bands position, Dr. Thompson conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting, and administers all aspects of the band program. Thompson has recorded five albums with the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble on the Summit Records label. Dr. Thompson received the Bachelor of Music Education degree and Master of Music degree in conducting from Northwestern University, where she studied conducting with John P. Paynter and trumpet with Vincent Cichowicz. She received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Donald Hunsberger. Dr. Thompson maintains an active schedule as guest conductor, conducting teacher, and guest lecturer throughout the United States and Canada. She has had the privilege of teaching conducting to thousands of undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional educators. Dr. Thompson has served as a conductor or clinician at the College Band Directors National Association regional and national conventions, the Midwest Clinic, the Interlochen Arts Academy, the International Trombone Association, the International Trumpet Guild, the American Bandmasters Association, numerous state music conventions, and the Aspen Music Festival. In addition to conducting all-state ensembles throughout the United States, she has had professional engagements as guest conductor with the United States Air Force Band, the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own," the United States Army Field Band, the United States Coast Guard Band, the United States Navy Band, the West Point Band, the Dallas Wind Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, Monarch Brass Ensemble, and Banda Sinfônica in Sao Pãulo, Brazil. Her professional affiliations include Pi Kappa Lambda, the College Band Directors National Association, and the American Bandmasters Association. Dr. Thompson is especially proud of her 50 graduate conducting students and the hundreds of outstanding Symphonic Wind DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS MEMBER LAUREATE an initiated member of the Fraternity who has achieved international distinction in the music profession
