Fall 2019 54 PAN PIPES NATIONAL ARTS ASSOCIATE a man or woman who is nationally recognized for distinguished contribution to the arts Ensemble members with whom she has had the joy of making music at Northwestern. She treasures her relationship with the Wildcat Marching Band and is honored to preserve and grow Northwestern's legacy. Her love for the school is palpable; she has had purple pride from the time she first set foot on campus. Dr. Thompson is an amazing conductor, an inspirational teacher, and a dedicated Wildcat. Current members of Beta Chapter look up to her as a woman who defies expectations and takes no nonsense; she is someone we all aspire to imitate in our lives. R O M I E D E G U I S E - L A N G L O I S Romie de Guise-Langlois was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Lambda Phi Chapter at the University of Massachusetts/ Amherst in April. A native of Montreal, Romie de Guise- Langlois received a Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University. She also holds a Master of Music degree, supported by the Canada Council of Arts, and an Artist Diploma from the Yale School of Music. Her principal teachers include David Shifrin, Michael Dumouchel, and André Moisan. Ms. de Guise-Langlois is praised among the ranks of clarinetists such as Charles Neidich of the Juilliard School and also her former teacher, David Shifrin from the Yale School of Music. She joined the UMass music faculty in the fall of 2016 and has since had a tremendous impact on the department as a whole. Beyond being an exceptional musician and performer, Romie is a remarkable teacher who instills in UMass music students an immense love and appreciation for music making. Her love for performing is incredibly contagious and inspiring. Romie regularly travels between Amherst, MA and New York City to maintain her active performing career while also teaching full-time at UMass. She has performed as an avid soloist and chamber musician throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. She has performed as a soloist with ensembles including the Houston Symphony, the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, the Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble ACJW, and at Festival Mozaic, Music@Menlo and Banff Center for the Arts. Ms. de Guise-Langlois has won numerous awards and competitions, including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation award, Astral Artists' National Auditions, the First Prize in the Ima Hogg Competition, the Woolsey Hall Competition at Yale University, the McGill University Classical Competition, and the Canadian Music Competition. As a chamber musician, Romie has toured with Musicians from Marlboro and appears on various chamber music series, included but not limited to the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Philadelphia and Boston Chamber Music Societies, the Kennedy Center, and Chamber Music Northwest. She has also performed as principal clarinetist for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Saint-Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, the New Haven and Stamford Symphony Orchestras, NOVUS NY and The Knights Chamber Orchestra. Ms. de Guise-Langlois is a Yamaha Artist and her performances have been broadcast on WNYC, WFMT, WQXR, Houston Public Radio, Vermont Public Radio, and across Canada on Radio-Canada. Ms. de Guise-Langlois has collaborated with such distinguished artists as Mitsuko Uchida, Yo-Yo Ma, Jeremy Denk, David Shifrin, Peter Wiley, Scott St. John, Viviane Hagner, the Brentano Quartet, the Miro Quartet, the Danish Quartet, and the Silk Road Ensemble. She has performed as principal clarinetist for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the New Haven and Stamford symphony orchestras, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, NOVUS NY, and The Knights Chamber Orchestra. A devoted educator, Ms. de Guise- Langlois engages communities as a clarinet professor, performer, and teaching artist. She has given masterclasses in Asia, Canada, and the U.S. and has been on the faculty of Kean University, the Colorado College Summer Music Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and Montclair University. She has been part of the Musical Connections program of Carnegie Hall and is an alumnus of Ensemble Connect. D O N N A M E N H A R T Donna Menhart was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Eta Mu Chapter at University of Hartford in April. Donna Menhart has been teaching Kodály and traditional ear training, music theory fundamentals, and harmony classes since 1993 at The Hartt School, University of Hartford, where she received the University of Hartford Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007. From 1990-2011 Professor Menhart served as the coordinator and Kodály ear-training/music theory instructor for the Performer's Certificate Program, a college- preparatory program for advanced high school musicians she developed for The Hartt School Community Division. As a Kodály Master Teacher, Donna has taught Musicianship Levels I, II and III for the Summer Kodály Certification Program at the Kodály Institute at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Professor Menhart is currently President for the Eastern Division of the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE) and Past President of the Kodály Educators of Southern New England (KESNE), has served on the KESNE Board since 2008, and was the National Program Chair for the 2013 DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS
