FALL 2020 23 PAN PIPES SIGMA ALPHA IOTA ANNUAL AWARDS 2 0 2 0 CATEGORY 1 (1-20 MEMBERS) Lawrence Theta A , Region II The Lawrence Alumnae chapter sponsored their annual Lilias Schmidt Young Musicians Honors Audition and Recital project. This project supports young musicians in grades 6-9. The purpose of the program is to provide middle school students with support to continue with their music studies, strive for excellence in performance, grow through competition, sharpen skills through adjudication comments, and develop camaraderie with peer musicians. The students are required to perform a prepared composition for a panel of judges. After the audition portion, the top performers get to perform in a recital. CATEGORY 2 (21-35 MEMBERS) Denver Xi C, Region I The Denver Alumnae Chapter provided music for The Gathering Place in Metro Denver. The Gathering Place is a daytime drop-in center that provides women, children, and members of the transgender community with job resources, meals, and health and wellness items. This project's goal is to bring quality chamber music to this vulnerable population. Members of the chapter provide bi-weekly lunchtime musicales. The benefits of this program were priceless. The children would come to lunch in complete distress, but as they listened to the music they began to laugh and enjoy themselves. A special caroling program was held for the holidays, and the attendees were encouraged to join the chorus. For that brief 45-60 minute musicale, the members of the Denver Alumnae Chapter gave the attendees the gift of music, providing a joyous moment away from their stressful lives. CATEGORY 3 (36 MEMBERS +) Tulsa Zeta A , Region II The Tulsa Alumnae chapter provided the opportunity for five students to receive a lesson with members of the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra (TSO). The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact with many chapters' ability to hold their service projects this year. The chapter was determined to hold and complete their service project. They were creative in their approach, and reached out to the TSO to see if they would be willing to help. Through the efforts of the chapter's two restaurant fundraisers and the TSO, five students had the opportunity to receive a virtual lesson from members of the orchestra. The students' levels ranged from elementary to high school. This project fostered music education, expanded community outreach, and supported professional musicians. Ft. Wayne Beta B, Region V This year the Fort Wayne Alumnae chapter participated in the Violins for Hope exhibition. The Violins for Hope is an exhibit of string instruments that were played by musicians in concentration camps during the Holocaust. The exhibition was held in Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana. Members of the chapter participated in various activities and volunteer positions during the two-week exhibition. Hundreds of community members had the opportunity to learn about the violins and the Holocaust. They also had the opportunity to hear the violins in a concert that was performed by the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. ANNELLE CHANDLER MCADAMS ALUMNAE SERVICE PROJECT AWARDS
