FALL 2020 26 PAN PIPES SIGMA ALPHA IOTA ANNUAL AWARDS 2 0 2 0 Kassandra Lopez Flute and Piccolo CAREER PERFORMANCE GRANT IN MEMORY OF VERNA ROSS ORNDORFF K assandra Lopez is a Denver based flutist, piccoloist, and educator who holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Denver, where she was initiated by the Sigma Upsilon Chapter. She is currently a Master of Music candidate at the University of Northern Colorado, where she is employed as a graduate assistant, and a member of the Denver Alumnae Chapter. She has been a local performer in Colorado orchestral and chamber ensembles, including the Arapaho Philharmonic, the Nebula Ensemble, Lorentz/Lopez, and the Bear Lake Quartet. Originally from Texas, she has had the opportunity to travel and study music under many prestigious flutists such as Brook Ferguson, Julie Thornton, Katherine Bryan, James Hall, and Art Bouton. She is passionate about classical and Latin music, as well as educating the next generation of flutists to find their individual voices. Lopez is married to trumpet player Evan King. The two have an adventurous dog, Roja, who loves to camp and hike in the beautiful state they reside in. With the career grant, she has already been able to perform at the Mile High Piccolo Masterclass and Credo Flute Masterclass. Next summer, she is invited to be a performer at the Summer Intensive for Contemporary Performance Practice where the grant will further help her aspirations.
