Fall 2020 40 P A N P I P E S bc FRIEND OF THE ARTS a man or woman who is supportive of and actively involved in the arts at a local or regional level Russell Jones Russell Jones was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Alpha Kappa Chapter at Pittsburg State University in December. Professor Emeritus Jones received a BA degree from Duke University, as well as MME and PhD degrees from Indiana University. Jones taught at Pittsburg State University since receiving his doctorate until his recent retirement, where his duties included department chair and teaching Instrumental Music Education, bassoon, and graduate courses. In addition to bassoon, he performs on clarinet, saxophone, and English horn. He has performed with the Southeast Kansas Symphony, Northeast Arkansas Symphony, and Ft. Smith Symphony, as well as numerous other bands and orchestras. He continues to be an active performer in chamber music, jazz, large ensemble, and as a soloist, including lead alto saxophone with the Crowder Jazz Orchestra. He has published articles in many professional journals, including e Instrumentalist and e Journal of Research in Music Education. Vindhya Khare Vindhya Khare was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Lambda Omicron Chapter at Florida International University (FIU) in March. Soprano Vindhya Khare has a voice described as "rich, agile…[and] radiant." (Miami Herald). She is sought aer as a soloist with engagements that include the Miami Bach Society Collegium, e Choral Society of the Palm Beaches, Palm Beach Atlantic University, recitalist on the FIU Faculty Artist Series, and performances with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba in Havana. Dr. Khare received her D.M.A. Degree in Vocal Pedagogy and Performance from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, with doctoral research in the field of sex hormones and the female singing voice. She has presented her research at the International Congress of Voice Teachers in Stockholm, Carnegie-Mellon University, the American Guild of Organists (Miami), Palm Beach Atlantic University, and the Savannah Voice Festival, with upcoming invitations at various universities. She also holds a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Florida International University, as well as an undergraduate degree in piano performance from California State University, Northridge. As an arts administrator, Dr. Khare is the Coordinator of Vocal Studies at FIU, Miami, as well as an instructor of voice. She has served as Artistic Director of the University Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale and is past President of the Paul L. Rodensky Foundation for the Arts. As an accomplished pianist and voice coach, Dr. Khare served as Principal Pianist/Voice Coach and Associate Chorus Master at Palm Beach Opera under the baton of the late Maestro Anton Guadagno. She is also on the music staff of Temple Sinai of the Palm Beaches and is a soprano soloist for Plymouth Congregational Church in Miami. Susan Marchant Susan Marchant was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Alpha Kappa Chapter at Pittsburg State University (PSU) in December. Dr. Marchant earned degrees in organ performance, with her undergraduate training at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, and MM, MMA, and DMA degrees at Yale University. She has been on the PSU faculty since 1979, with duties including applied organ and harpsichord, music theory, literature, and department chair. As an active keyboard performer, she has presented nationally on prominent recital series, including a national convention of the Organ Historical Society. Dr. Marchant has served as Director of Choral Activities at Pittsburg State since 1988 and is the director of music for Pittsburg's First United Methodist Church. She has served on the State Boards of KMEA and ACDA, and she is a past dean of both the Ozark and the Southeast Kansas Chapters of the AGO. Dr. James Stokes, Jr. Dr. James M. Stokes, Jr. was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Epsilon Theta Chapter at Appalachian State University in September. Dr. Stokes is the Professor of Trumpet for the Appalachian State University Hayes School of Music. He holds Doctoral and Master's degrees in performance from e Ohio State University and a Bachelors degree in music education from Indiana University, where he studied trumpet with William Adam. He has performed with the Charlotte Symphony, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, CAPA Broadway Show Series, the Piedmont Wind Symphony, and is co-principal of the Symphony of the Mountains. Dr. Stokes has performed with numerous popular, Hollywood, and Broadway artists including John Williams, Doc Severinsen, Don Henley, Frank Sinatra, Jr, Aretha Franklin, e Temptations, e O'Jays, Mannheim Steamroller, Barry Manilow, Canadian Brass, and others. Dr. Stokes has premiered many new works for trumpet including: Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by omas Zugger (2010), Concerto for Trumpet and Winds by William Harbinson (2011) and Games (2009), a trumpet quartet by Scott Meister. In 2015, he premiered the omas Sleeper Concerto for Trumpet and Chamber Orchestra (re-orchestrated for chamber orchestra by the composer) with the Appalachian Philharmonia Orchestra, omas Sleeper conducting. Performances of the Concerto for Trumpet and Winds by William Harbinson occurred in May of 2012 with the Indiana Wind Symphony and in June 2012 for the ASBDA National Convention, in addition to the premier performances in 2011. In addition to hosting the William Adam International Trumpet Festival in 2019, he has been a frequent soloist for the conferences held in Norman, OK, Los Angeles, CA, and in Boone, NC. In 2017, Stokes premiered George Naff 's Jubilant Dance and Serenade for solo trumpet and wind ensemble at the North Carolina Music Educator's Association conference in Winston- Salem, NC with the Piedmont Wind Symphony, Matthew Troy conducting. Subsequent performances were performed in 2018- 19 with the Appalachian Wind Ensemble and the Symphony of the Mountains (re-orchestrated by the composer). Online in the summer of 2020, Stokes collaborated as a soloist with Hayes School of Music faculty for the Appalachian Summer Festival. Dr. Stokes can be heard in performance frequently at the Hayes School of Music on the ASU campus and with the Symphony of the Mountains. DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS Jones Khare Marchant Stokes Jr.
