Winter 2021 24 24 P A N P I P E S DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS Music Composition and eory from Rowan University and dual Bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Fine Arts from Saint Joseph's University. Her commissions include works for e Etchings Festival, highSCORE Music Festival, Atlantic Music Festival, New Voices @ CUA, and e Atlantic Center for the Arts. She has also been commissioned to create stage works for Synetic eatre, e Shakespeare eatre Company, and CUAdrama. In addition to writing music, her research interests include the music of the twentieth and twenty- first century, particularly the works of SAI Composers Bureau Member Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, and other contemporary women composers. She is a member of ASCAP, e College Music Society, and e Society for Music eory. Dr. Anne Heminger Dr. Anne Heminger was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Beta Sigma Chapter at the University of Tampa in November. Dr. Heminger is Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Tampa. Her research centers on the English Reformation, examining how the composition, dissemination, and performance of religious music shaped the early modern construction of English identity in the sixteenth century. Her book project, titled Confession Carried Alo: Music, Religious Politics, and National Identity in Mid-Tudor London, highlights the key role religious music played in fueling competing and historically rooted notions of Englishness from Henry VIII's break with Rome into the first years of Elizabeth I's reign. She holds a Bachelor's in Music from the University of Chicago, a Master's in Musicology from Cambridge, and a PhD in Historical Musicology from the University of Michigan. She is the author of two articles: "Music eory at Work: e Eton Choirbook, Rhythmic Proportions, and Musical Networks in Sixteenth- Century England," (Early Music History, 2018) and "'Zu dienst wan sy syngen jn eynn:' Music, Politics, and the Reformed Livonian Service Books of 1530 and 1537," published in Celebrating Lutheran Church Music. Beyond the English Reformation, her research and teaching interests include late medieval devotional culture, liturgy and ritual studies, the development of music printing and technology, and twentieth-century Baltic choral music. Constance L. M. Hoover Constance L.M. Hoover was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Mu Beta Chapter at Virginia State University in December. Mrs. Hoover, affectionately known as Mrs. MC, is an alumna of Virginia State University hailing from Petersburg, Virginia, and attributes her connection to music to her larger than life family. Her musical journey began when her grandmother, namesake of Catherine Johnson and e Daughters of Faith, invited her to be the youngest member of the singing group at the tender age of 3. Mrs. Hoover received both her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Public Administration. She was a member of the Marching "Trojan Explosion" Band, where she was a member of the "Sounds of Insanity" Trumpet Section, a member of the VSU Concert Choir, and Worship Coordinator for VSU FLOW United Campus Ministries. Although she planned to attend law school aer graduation, she was offered an opportunity immediately to connect with Prodigy Productions Music Group, LLC, a grassroots sound reinforcement and recording studio in Richmond, VA. She was first introduced as a background singer, and during the process of creating a children's project, her writing and vocal production came to life. Mrs. Hoover, then flourished as a staff writer and extended her capabilities to vocal coaching. While working in the A&R Division, she became responsible for prepping vocals for recording and live performances. Mrs. Hoover also partnered with a non-profit organization that became her pride and joy, Countywide Tri-Cities Music & Arts Workshop of Richmond, an eight-week program designed to enhance the skill set of hundreds of youth between the ages of eight to twenty- one. Now, as an advisor and mentor to the Mu Beta Chapter SAI, she inspires its members to challenge themselves and excel at music. She is an original founder of the interest group which would later become the Mu Beta Chapter. Dr. Laurie Middaugh Dr. Laurie Middaugh was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Mu Eta Chapter at the University of Montavello in November. Dr. Middaugh, received both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance from the University of Montevallo, studying piano with Ms. Joan Cowan and Dr. Anthony Pattin, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Alabama, studying piano with Mrs. Amanda Penick. Dr. Middaugh's interest in collaborative piano began as a freshman at the University of Montevallo when she began playing for lessons and recitals for fellow students as part of her scholarship. In addition to her education in piano performance, Dr. Middaugh has also received coaching in collaborative piano in master classes with Dalton Baldwin, John Steele Ritter, and Dennis Helmrich. She was a student at the American Institute of Music Study (AIMS) in Graz, Austria, where she coached lieder with Betty Bullock and Nico de Villiers, and piano with Charlene Harb, and participated in the Music Directors Intensive at Goodspeed Opera House. Dr. Middaugh has served as staff accompanist at the University of Montevallo for the past fieen years collaborating with student, faculty, guest artist recitals, operas, revues, and musical theater productions. She also serves as Music Director for the Division of eater and teaches classes in ear training, theory, and keyboard for both the music and theater departments. She has collaborated with area professionals, worked with Opera Birmingham, regional Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, the Alabama Symphony, and Alabama Ballet. Dr. Middaugh is also organist and choir director at the Anglican Church of the Holy Comforter in Montevallo, where she lives with her husband, professor emeritus of voice, Dr. Bennie Middaugh. Claire Murphy Claire Murphy was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Nu Gamma Chapter at Stephen F. Austin State University in October. Professor Murphy is Coordinator of Music Education at Stephen F. Austin State University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate music education courses and coordinates the music clinical teacher program. She is currently Nu Gamma's faculty advisor. She was previously the Chair of Music Education at the University of Idaho, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, coordinated and supervised the student teacher program, and conducted the Women's Chorus.
