P A N P I P E S Spring 2021 23 23 D R . N A N S I C A R R O L L Dr. Nansi Carroll was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Gainesville Alumnae Chapter in March. Dr. Carroll studied voice at the Royal Academy of Music in London (1969-1977), Tanglewood, and the Yale University School of Music. At Yale, she received her Master of Music in 1975, her Master of Musical Arts in 1976, and her Doctor of Musical Arts in 1982. Dr. Carroll is a former faculty member of Stetson University, the University of Florida, and the Walden School. She is the retired Director of Music at St. Augustine Church in Gainesville, FL, and is a cofounder of the Jubilus concert series. In addition to numerous recitals, Dr. Carroll has sung with the Annapolis Symphony, the New Jersey Symphony, the Peabody Trio, and the Willis Bodine Chorale. Dr. Carroll is a prolific and active composer. She has composed over 300 vocal, choral, piano, and other instrumental works. Among her many commissions, she has received commissions from the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. She collaborated with actor Andre De Shields in A Long Way from Home, a performance piece for piano trio and spoken voice. is composition was given its premiere performance at New York University with Mr. De Shields and the Peabody Trio. From 1999- 2019 over 40 of her original compositions in a wide variety of genres, both instrumental and vocal, were performed in the Jubilius series. Examples of her other compositions include several pieces for bassoon, one being the commission by Javier Rodriguez for Mr. Mitty. Her composition Stabat Mater was written at the time of the Second Iraq War. She has described the composition as "variations on the spiritual Were You ere." Karen Slack and the Daedalus Quartet premiered her work On My Journey Now: Five Spirituals at the Annenberg Center, University of Pennsylvania, in January of 2020. D R . J O N AT H A N F O W L E R Dr. Jonathan Fowler was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter at West Chester University in January. Dr. Fowler is the Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at West Chester University of Pennsylvania (WCUPA). He holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College- Conservatory of Music (CCM), Temple University, and Rutgers University. During his education, Jonathan performed with the CCM Wind Symphony, the Rutgers Wind Ensemble, and the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra. Recordings of these ensembles can be heard on the Naxos, Bridge, and Mark Custom record labels. As a faculty member at WCUPA, Dr. Fowler teaches applied tuba and euphonium lessons, trumpet class, trombone class, and also coaches small ensembles, in addition to running the WCUPA Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble. Aside from performing his own faculty recitals, Dr. Fowler has appeared as a soloist with the WCUPA Wind Symphony and the WCUPA Brass Ensemble. He also performs extensively with orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the mid-Atlantic, including the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and the New Jersey Festival Orchestra. Previous engagements have included performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke's, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Harrisburg Symphony, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Reading Symphony, Orchestra of St. Cecilia's, Opera eatre of New Jersey, and Orchestra Teatro Grattacielo. He has performed with notable acts such as Sarah McLaughlin, Il Volo, Celtic Woman, Jefferson Starship, and Michael Feinstein. Dr. Fowler has been a faculty member at the inaugural 2019 Tuba and Euphonium workshop and 2018 Low Brass workshop (Taller de Trombones) in Panama City, Panama. Previously he has appeared at the International Baroque Festival in Santa Ana, Costa Rica, and the Aruba Music Festival. Dr. Fowler has also been a regular contributor to the International Tuba and Euphonium Association journal, writing reviews for newly composed solos and chamber works. D R . R I C H A R D WAT E R S Dr. Richard Waters was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Eta Sigma Chapter at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) in March. Dr. Waters is Director of Choral Activities, Voice Area Coordinator, and Professor of Music at Eastern Kentucky University, where he directs the university's three choral ensembles and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting and choral literature. Choirs under his direction have been invited to perform at the ACDA Southern Division Conference (Memphis, 2010), the Kentucky Music Educators Association state conference (Louisville, 2016), and the Mississippi ACDA/MMEA state conference (Jackson, 2007 and 2011). His choirs have performed in several notable national and international venues, including Carnegie Hall, Washington National Cathedral, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, York Minster, Salzburg Cathedral, and have toured throughout England, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Ireland.
