10 Spring 2022 • sai-national.org Wen in Music By Janis Braun-Levine, Ponchartrain Alumnae Chapter and Emily Borus, Detroit Alumnae Chapter As with many SAI sisters, our involvements in music are varied and oen intersect with our fellow sisters in a given community. In Royal Oak, MI, several sisters participate in a community band called the Royal Oak Concert Band (ROCB) and their sister organization, the Woodward Avenue Jazz Orchestra (WAJO). ese ensembles are Detroit-area community organizations that have been entertaining local audiences for many decades. Janis Braun-Levine (President, Pontchartrain Alumnae Chapter) plays flute in the ROCB and Emily Borus (Treasurer, Detroit Alumnae Chapter) plays clarinet and alto saxophone in the ROCB and WAJO. In the spring of 2019, inspired by SAI's National Objective to "promote women in music," Janis and Emily brought the idea of presenting a concert, consisting of music composed by and about women, to the ROCB director. e director immediately embraced the idea and came up with a delightful and diverse program called "Women of Music" to be performed in May of 2020. Janis and Emily decided that the "Women of Music" concert would be a perfect opportunity for their two Alumnae Chapters to organize a Joint Service Project to sponsor the concert. During the summer of 2019 Janis and Emily developed a Service Project Proposal and a Project Plan with tasks, a budget, and a suggested timeline. e Proposal and Project Plan were presented to the Executive Boards of both Alumnae Chapters and were enthusiastically approved.
