She has taught K12 music in rural and urban settings in Virginia and Chicago Public Schools. Dr. Strand served as the vocal/choir faculty for the Virginia Governor's School for the Humanities and Visual and Performing Arts, and she coordinated and developed curricula for a new elementary guitar curriculum in partnership with Templeton Elementary School, Bloomington IN. Her research interests include teaching for musical creativity, curriculum analysis and critique, and preservice teacher preparation. In addition to authoring several pedagogical and research-based book chapters, co-editing and writing chapters for Musicianship: Composing in Choir, Dr. Strand has teaching articles in the Music Educators Journal, Teaching Music, General Music Today, and research articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Philosophy of Music Education Review, and Music Education Researcher. As a lead teacher, Dr. Strand worked with Cheerful Heart Mission to develop and provide yearly music workshops in the Dominican Republic and Haiti; these were designed to provide professional development workshops to teachers and guitar classes to children in those locations. Dr. Strand was also the Director and an instructor for the Smithsonian Folkways Certification in World Music Pedagogy program. Dr. Strand has a MM in Choral Conducting from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and a BM of Arts in Vocal Music from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. She earned her PhD in Music Education from Northwestern University; her thesis was titled Nurturing Young Composers: Exploring the Relationship between Instruction and Transfer in 9-12-Year-Old Students. Dr. DuWayne Dale Dr. DuWayne Dale was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Gamma Upsilon Chapter at Morehead State University in March. Dr. Dale serves as Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Morehead State University (MSU). He joined the music faculty of MSU aer 18 years of teaching high school band and orchestra in public schools in Ohio and Kentucky. He has also served as adjunct music education and private applied faculty at Kentucky Wesleyan College and as a regional arts specialist for the Kentucky Department of Education. Dr. Dale holds a DMA from Boston University, a Kentucky Rank I Certification in music education and conducting from the University of Kentucky, and both MM and BME degrees from Morehead State University. Dale remains an active instrumentalist, having performed on trombone frequently with the Dayton Jazz Orchestra, the Kim Kelly Big Band, e Owensboro Symphony Second Street Big Band, the Bend in the River Brass Band (River Brass), the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra and numerous other ensembles over the span of his teaching career. He has contributed to GIA Publications' Teaching Music ough Performance in Band series and has been interviewed on the topic of helping young music teachers overcoming early career hurdles. He is a member of National Association for Music Education (NAfME/KMEA), College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), and the National Band Association (NBA). He was named the 2012 KMEA second district High School Music Educator of the Year, the 2018 and 2020 KMEA eighth district College/University Educator of the Year, and has twice been honored with a Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association. Dr. Dale is in demand as a guest conductor/clinician and maintains an active schedule working with high school and middle school bands, conducting regional honor bands, and adjudicating music festivals and competitions. Nathan Mensink Nathan Mensink was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Gamma Upsilon Chapter at Morehead State University in March. Mr. Mensink is a Henri Selmer performing artist active in both classical and jazz styles and has taught saxophone at Morehead State University since 2018. His musical endeavors have taken him across the United States and Europe. He is a frequent soloist with various university ensembles, orchestras, and community groups, and was most recently featured with the Morehead State Symphony Band at the 2022 Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) conference. Other notable solo performances include John Williams' Escapades with the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, opening a Festival Miami program featuring singer-songwriter Ben Folds, and Ralph Martino's Gershwin Fantasy under the baton of legendary conductor Colonel Arnald Gabriel. He has performed with the New World Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, the Frost Symphony Orchestra, the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, Frost Opera eater, Salt Lake Symphonic Winds, Cave Run Symphony, Lynn Philharmonia, and more. An avid fan of jazz, he has backed artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Take Six, Michael Feinstein, Kirk Whalum, Harry Watters, Byron Stripling, and many others. An avid supporter of music education, Mensink is regularly found visiting local schools and participating in community events of all kinds. Mensink holds a Doctoral and Master's degree in saxophone performance from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL and a Bachelor's degree in music education from Utah State University in Logan, UT.
