28 Spring 2023 • sai-national.org considers herself to be a professional multi- hyphenate proving that a career in the arts can take many forms. She has long been associated with the Broadway musical Wicked as one of it's Elphabas, performing on the First National Tour and on Broadway. She stepped back into the role amid the COVID surge in New York in early 2022 after not having performed Elphaba in seven years and becoming a software engineer. Her career has been varied, as most artist's careers are. She taught voice on the faculties of Marymount Manhattan College and Molloy College's CAP21 musical theatre in New York and managed her own private voice studio. Working through the Educational Theatre Association, she has crossed the country doing master classes for high schools, colleges, and International Thespian Festivals. Stickler has done publicity performances for Wicked, worked with the organization Artists Who Code, given solo performances working as a guest performer on cruise ships, and mentored young women musicians. She is a strong believer that STEM programs should include the arts and should be STEAM! She has been featured on Inside Edition, NPR Weekend Edition with Scott Simon, NPR Morning Edition on their series about changing careers during the pandemic, Good Morning America, The Today Show, Nightline, Vulture, Huffington Post, People Magazine, and most recently the March 2023 issue of Marie Claire magazine on Changing the Conversation, Season 2 of "She Pivots" podcast. She has been interviewed on over nine podcasts ranging from those concerned with Broadway to the tech world to school education. Carla spent over ten years in Broadway musicals. She has also performed the role of Liesl in The Sound of Music - Asia Tour and the role of Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia! on the National tour. She holds a BFA from NYU-Tisch School of the Arts and a MA from NYU-Steinhardt School of Education, as well as a voice teaching certification from the CCM Institute and a 40 Hour Voice Teacher Training and Certification through New York Vocal Coaching. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and Actors Equity. She is currently a software engineer at G2 in Chicago and is an advocate for artists, especially women, looking to make a career change into tech. She believes that when we tell kids to only go into the arts if they cannot see themselves doing anything else, we stunt their imagination to what is possible. She is also passionate about reframing the narrative of the "starving artist". Carla is knowledgeable, kind, empathetic, generous of spirit, and supportive of all she comes in contact with. And she strongly believes that just because an artist walks away to survive, they have not failed as artists. "The possibilities for what we can do and who we can be are unlimited."
