During this time Dr. Gardner focused on introducing works composed by women and underrepresented minorities to his students at both UI and IWU, a focus he brings to the classroom at Appalachian State. Dr. Elizabeth Hainrihar Dr. Elizabeth Hainrihar was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Kappa Tau Chapter at Capital University in April. In her time as faculty at Capital University, Dr. Hainrihar has made a significant impact on the institution's treble choral ensemble, Cantabile, which she directs. She also serves as a professor of Conducting. A graduate of Capital's Kodaly Certification Program in 2008, Dr. Hainrihar is a long-time friend of Capital and is dedicated to becoming a master choral educator. She has been a music teacher at numerous Ohio-area schools, including those in Dublin, Marysville, Lewis Center, Independence, and Galena. She earned her doctoral degree in Conducting from e Ohio State University and since then has continued to actively contribute to the choral community. Most recently she presented a session at OMEA State Conference (2023) titled "Developing Musicianship Skills rough Sight-Singing" and was guest conductor of the OMEA District 13 Honor Choir. Dr. Tanner Harrod Dr. Tanner Harrod was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Lincoln Alumnae Chapter in April. Dr. Harrod is a composer and performer based in Lincoln, Nebraska. Originally from Murphy, Texas, Harrod enjoys writing for many different mediums, including solo performers, chamber and large ensembles, as well as for voice. He pursued a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music. As a graduate assistant, Harrod served as the Assistant Director of the Flyover New Music Series and also taught Applied Composition, History of Rock, and Aural Skills. Harrod received the Master of Music degree in music theory from the University of Oklahoma (OU). He graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M University–Commerce, where he received the Bachelor of Science degree in Music with an All-Level Teacher Certification. In addition to his work as a theory pedagogue and composer, he maintains an active performance schedule as both a guitarist and french hornist, primarily in musical theatre. Recent highlights include Something Rotten! with Ralston Community eatre (Ralston, NE). As a jazz musician, Harrod collaborates frequently with saxophonist Bryan Canonigo and vocalist/ keyboardist Bobby Gaudory at various venues around Lincoln. In February of 2020 Tanner played mandolin for the world premier of Tony Maglione's Dust Bowl with the Verdigris Ensemble at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Simon Holoweiko Dr. Simon Holoweiko was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Sigma Phi Chapter at Louisiana State University (LSU) in April. Dr. Holoweiko is the Associate Director of Bands at Louisiana State University, where he conducts the Symphonic Winds, teaches undergraduate conducting and graduate wind literature, guides doctoral students minoring in conducting, and works with the Golden Band from Tigerland. Holoweiko joined the faculty following successful appointments at Michigan State University and Martin County High School in Stuart, Florida. Aer serving as Assistant Director of Bands at MSU, where his duties included Associate Director of the Spartan Marching Band, conductor of the Concert Band, Spartan Youth Wind Symphony, and teaching courses in the College of Music, Holoweiko completed his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in Wind Conducting at Michigan State University as a student of Dr. Kevin Sedatole. He also holds the Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University where he studied with Dr. Jamie L. Nix and assisted with all aspects of the wind program. Holoweiko is also the conductor and a co-founder of the Treasure Coast Summer Band Camp in Jensen Beach, FL and is an active clinician. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Michigan State University. Dr. Brent Johnson Dr. Brent Johnson was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Iota Beta Chapter at Murray State University (MSU) in April. Dr. Johnson is the Director of University Bands at Murray State University in Murray, KY where he previously served as the Director of Athletic Bands/Associate Director of Bands. At Murray State, Dr. Johnson conducts the Wind Ensemble, teaches conducting courses, and serves as director of the Racer Marching Band. Dr. Johnson received his DMA in Wind Conducting from the University of Kentucky, where he served as a Doctoral Teaching Assistant with Dr. Cody Birdwell. Prior to moving to Lexington, he spent 5 years as the Director of Bands at Evergreen High School in Vancouver, Washington. While at Evergreen, the concert bands showed tremendous growth and garnered much attention for their improvement in quality and literature. Dr. Johnson received his doctorate from the University of Kentucky in May of 2021 and his Master of Music in Music Education Degree from New Mexico State University (NMSU). Prior to NMSU, Dr. Johnson was a graduate of Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Kentucky Music Educators Association, and the Collegiate Band Directors National Association. Justin G. McCrary Justin G. McCrary was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Kappa Lambda Chapter at West Virgina University in April. Mr. McCrary is a Graduate Assistant for West Virginia University Bands and a DMA Conducting Candidate. He received his Bachelor of Music Education, with emphasis in trombone, from Appalachian State University in 2009. He received his Master of Music Education from Ohio University in 2020.
