Philanthropies Awar 2 0 2 3 S I G M A A L P H A I O T A Fall 2023 36 CAREER PERFORMANCE GRANT IN MEMORY OF VERNA ROSS ORNDORFF S elia Myers recently graduated from the University of Maryland (UMD) with a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. While at UMD, Selia performed as a member of the Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and Opera Orchestra, performing works such as Husa's Music for Prague 1968 (as piccolo soloist), Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, and Weill's Zaubernacht (as principal flute). Selia has also won prizes in competitions, including the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia Collegiate Artist Competition (Second Prize, 2022), the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention Collegiate Soloist Competition (Third Prize, 2021), and the San Diego Flute Guild's Spring Festival Guest Artist Masterclass (Performer for Valerie Coleman, 2021). She has performed in masterclasses for Bonita Boyd, Mindy Kaufman, Allison Loggins-Hull, Marina Piccinini, and Paula Robison, among numerous other famed flutists. She participated in the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee in 2022, where she played principal flute in the Sewanee Symphony's world premiere performance of Avner Dorman's Double Concerto. She also premiered solo and chamber works by student composers at Sewanee. Selia's past instructors are Dr. Sarah Frisof, Aaron Goldman, and Leah Arsenault Barrick. She currently studies with Alison Fierst and Lily Josefsberg. Selia plans to earn a master's degree in flute or piccolo performance in the coming years, with the intention of pursuing a career as an orchestral performer and private flute instructor. Co-sponsored by the George T. Walker Center for Equity and Inclusion in Music and the Institute for Music Leadership, this 2-day conference is for anyone interested in learning about equity and inclusion in K-12, collegiate, and arts organizations. ZETA TAU U n i v e r s i t y o f C e n t r a l F l o r i d a , L a m b d a C, R e g i o n V I UCF Celebrates the Arts is a unique, multi-disciplinary festival of visual arts, performing arts, and the humanities presented at Orlando's premiere performing arts facility, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Arts. The mission of the festival is to connect the University arts with the community.
