Fall 2023 37 Philanthropies Awar 2 0 2 3 S I G M A A L P H A I O T A OUTREACH GRANTS FORT LAUDERDALE ALUMNAE L a m b d a A , R e g i o n V I The Fort Lauderdale Alumnae Chapter was awarded $250 to assist with the scholarship the chapter awards to various music departments in their area, many of the applicants being teachers at Title 1 schools. The scholarship applicants are narrowed down to three finalists and their needs could include assistance in rebuilding a music program, utilizing funds to purchase sheet music or instruments, or to offset the cost of instrument repairs. The Fort Lauderdale Alumnae Chapter has been awarding this scholarship to local teachers for the past 20 years. TAMPA ALUMNAE L a m b d a D, R e g i o n V I The Tampa Alumnae Chapter was awarded $500 to work with Delta Chapter in awarding a local school their SAI Music Education Outreach Grant. The recipient was Javi Rodriguez, the Band Director at Tinker K-8 School in Tampa. Tinker School is located on MacDill Air Force Base in South Tampa, where many of its students come from military families. These families move regularly so the population changes constantly. The music program at Tinker School includes 82% of the middle school population. With the funds from this grant, Mr. Rodriguez is now able to purchase concert music, as well as drum, woodwind, and percussion accessories for their newly expanded middle school ensembles that meet after school. ANN ARBOR ALUMNAE A l p h a A , R e g i o n V I I The Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter was awarded $500 to help purchase musical equipment for the Ypsilanti District Library's "Library of Things." Along with this grant, the chapter used funds they had to purchase guitar cases, a ¾ size classical guitar, a microphone with a stand and cable, a MIDI controller, instrument cables, a Yamaha gig Electric Guitar Pack, and a portable speaker/microphone set. The Ypsilanti District Library provides services to lower income populations. DENTON ALUMNAE K a p p a B, R e g i o n I I The Denton Alumnae Chapter was awarded $500 towards the purchase of children's books for local elementary schools and/or area Tiny Library programs. The books featured topics that represent the contribution women have had and continue to have in the world of music. The three chosen titles included: Anneli Loepp Thiessen and Haeon Grace Kang's The ABCs of Women in Music; Shannon Stocker's Listen: How Evelyn Glennie, a Deaf Girl, Changed Percussion; and Rebel Girls Rock: 25 Tales of Women in Music. PHOENIX ALUMNAE O m i c ro n , R e g i o n I The Phoenix Alumnae Chapter was awarded $100 to assist the Guitars for Vets program, which assists retired military who suffer from PTSD and other service-related issues by providing them with guitar lessons, instruments, and the opportunity to share their experiences with fellow veterans through their monthly meetings. The healing power of music has helped many of those involved and many who join in the program become teachers. The Phoenix Alumnae Chapter purchased a guitar and gave Guitars for Vets $200 to help them with the program.
