Fall 2023 49 Philanthropies Awar 2 0 2 3 S I G M A A L P H A I O T A concerts, performing throughout the region. Our first concert was in Ravenna, where we performed right next to the tomb of Italian poet and philosopher Dante Aligheri. is outdoor concert was attended by almost 1000 people. e following three concerts were performed in theatres in Sant'Agata, Macerata, and Novafeltria, programming several arias, scenes, and the world premiere of Raphael's new choral piece, Le parole dei mesi for SATB choir. Our final performance was a beautiful garden concert on our final evening in Novafeltria. We performed music outside of the Italian opera repertoire, putting together the program in about 24 hours. ere are so many things I uncovered as a musician over the course of two and a half weeks in Novafeltria. What I am most excited to bring back to my students and work is my newfound understanding of the Italian language and how it relates to the bel canto repertoire. roughout the program, I was reminded of how the Italian language and its pure vowels, along with purposeful consonants, are truly the key to the art of bel canto. It is through our careful and intentional work with the language that we can interpret and perform Italian repertoire at the highest level of artistry and musicianship. As a human, I am most grateful for experiencing the beauty in the process. I have not participated in many summer programs before, but they all have one thing in common — you will do a lot of work in a very short amount of time. If you blink, you might miss it all. We, as a collective group of young artists in Novafeltria, were working together with the faculty to develop five different concerts for Italian audiences. Each program was only about one and a half to two hours long. Truly, the time we put in outweighs the actual events themselves. However, in these long days and many hours of work, we grew exponentially. We formed wonderful friendships and musical relationships with one another, not unlike what happens in our Sigma Alpha Iota sisterhood. ere is so much beauty in the process of craing this art, and I am grateful to Classic Lyric Arts and SAI Philanthropies, Inc. for the opportunity to take part in this experience.
