2 Spring 2024 • sai-national.org D ear Members of Sigma Alpha Iota, Our days are getting longer, and we can finally feel aspects of spring in the air. There is more sunshine to enjoy and a profound sense of hope and renewal. It's a great time to set new goals and make plans for the future. I hope one of those goals is to attend our upcoming 2025 National Convention in Minneapolis, MN. As many of us have experienced, amazing things happen when our members come together to celebrate music and sisterhood. You get to share common experiences, take in some amazing performances, have a meaningful conversation with someone new, and walk away with a renewed sense of purpose in our great Fraternity. So come get "United in Music," and if you have a performance or workshop you would like to share, don't forget to submit an audition or proposal for consideration. Sticking with that theme of springtime goals and planning, don't forget to support our charitable arm, SAI Philanthropies, Inc. The Brick Initiative is in full swing. What better way to memorialize your chapter or role in the Fraternity than personalizing your own piece of SAI history. This program serves to improve and update the look of our National Headquarters while raising money to support the educational and charitable goals of our Fraternity. However, this is just one way that you can give back to the organization that gives us so much. Perhaps you are graduating from college this year and are interested in joining the 1903 Club. Perhaps you applied for a scholarship this spring and are looking to promote our organization abroad. Perhaps you've chosen to actively participate in our community of giving and joined the Symphony Society. However you choose to participate, know that it makes a difference and has an impact. This issue of Pan Pipes is literally heralding us into spring with the feature on the Alphorn. It's wonderful to read about the dedication these society members have to the instrument and what it symbolizes. In addition, there are write-ups on some amazing musicians and educators that have received grants from SAI Philanthropies, Inc. to further develop and support their chosen careers. This issue also commemorates the lives of notable SAIs and celebrates the amazing professional achievements of some of our members. The camaraderie and support of our members is visible as they attend various state music conferences around the county, and passionate stories share tales of empowerment and confidence. Don't forget to check out the article about metalcore music. Lastly, we journey around the world with our globetrotting members who have taken in the sights and appreciated or performed music. I found myself enamored with this eclectic issue, and I hope you do as well. I'd like to close this greeting with a little personal anecdote. I recently attended a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana at the Philadelphia Orchestra. I loved every note of it. I sang along. I beat out the rhythms on my legs. I bounced up and down in my seat to the different time signatures. I squealed with delight as a big wooden hammer struck one of the two gongs on stage. I was thoroughly annoying and completely unapologetic. I went into that concert hall weighed down by the stressful parts of life but left there renewed and filled with optimism and joy. As such, I hope each of you find your own "Carmina Burana" moment this spring.
