2012 National Convention"The Healing Power of Music" SAI to Honor Hubbells at 2012 National Convention F ormer NVP Ritual (1984- He became a Sigma Alpha Iota Friend of the Arts in 1982 and was the first male to attend the opening ritual at the 1984 National Convention. She was initiated by the Iota Omicron chapter in 1956, and served the chapter as treasurer and president. She later became a member of the Lafayette and dedication. Lafayette Alumnae Chapter member Geraldine Hubbell and Friend of the Arts Dr. Gerald Hubbell are the 2012 National Convention Honorees. They are seen here at the 2009 Convention in Chicago. Hubbell was the official Previous Convention Honorees accompanist for two of their national conventions in Minneapolis and Cincinnati. She is the recipient 1990 Margaret Blackburn Grace Carlson of the Sword of Honor, Rose of Honor, Wreath of Honor, Diamond Sword, Rose of Dedication, Rose of Constancy and Ring of Excellence. 1993 Dorothy Cooke Whinery Ruth Gould-Mohr Her musical careers have included being an independent piano teacher, church organist, professional accompanist for Columbia Artists, 1997 Dorothy Kirk Hamilton Lela Putney university teacher and staff accompanist. Her last employment was in arts administration as the executive director of the Acadiana Symphony 2000 Mildred Mae Meloy von Tungeln Elsie Sterrenberg Orchestra. She currently serves as a free lance accompanist and church organist. As a professional accompanist, she has 2003 Patricia Stenberg performed on the concert stage with violinists Endre Balogh, Eugene Fodor, Xiao Lu Li and Daniel 2006 Barbara Staton Phillips; violist Gilad Karni, and singers Brian Schexnayder, Elizabeth Futral, Ruth Falcon, Brenda 2009 Dorothy Kittaka Boozer, Martha Ann Thigpen, Peter Lightfoot, Joseph Wolverton, Wanda Brister, Patricia Woodard, 2012 Dr. Gerald Hubbell Geraldine Hubbell David Bernard, and Susan Straley. Hubbell received awards as a Woman of Achievement for the City of Lafayette in 1982 and was named one of seven "Women who Mean Business" in Lafayette in 1999. She and "Sister Gerald" have been honored by the Chorale Acadienne and the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra for their support of the arts in the Acadiana region. 10 F riend of the Arts, Gerald Joseph Hubbell, MD, Lafayette physician and teacher at the LSU University Medical Center is attending his tenth convention. His first was at the Phoenix convention in 1987. PAN PIPESSPRING 2012 sai-national.org Dr. Hubbell is known as the "humming doctor" by the nurses and patients. By his friends he is known for his extensive tape library and for his efforts in keeping opera and culture alive in Acadiana. Also a visual artist, his paintings hang on the walls of the University Medical Center and the Music department library at University of Louisiana Lafayette. "Sister Gerald" is a passionate lover of music, especially opera, chamber music and choral music; his hobbies include listening, collecting and recording of concerts given by local organizations. He was the founder and president of the Krewe of Opera Nuts Association, and was the first board president of Chorale Acadienne, an outstanding choral group in Acadiana. His efforts were rewarded by the Chorale when the entire 2007-08 season was dedicated to him and his wife, Geraldine. Likewise, the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra will recognize the Hubbells at their April 2013 concert. An opera "nut" since he was a teenager, he has amassed one of the largest collection of opera tapes of live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera. In addition to opera, Gerald recorded and archived the recitals and the many programs in which his wife, Geraldine Hubbell, collaborated through the past forty years. Dr. Hubbell earned a degree in music education from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1959, and a medical degree from LSU in 1965. In 1966-1968, he served his country as a second lieutenant in the US Navy, stationed in Chu Lai, Viet Nam.
